I've thought a lot what is and isn't a brand, and what factors define a brand in the minds of others.

I dedicated a whole chapter of Captivology to the psychology of framing -- how our attention can radically change based on how something is presented. If someone this perceived to be scarce, for example, we subconsciously attribute more value to that item.

In the case of brands, perception really does become reality. A brand really is just a perception, positive or negative, of a person or company.

Luckily, we have the power to frame those conversations and steer perceptions, which is what I talk about in more detail in today's video. I'd love to hear your thoughts in comments on the subject of brands and what is a brand.
What is a brand? Author Ben Parr discusses the anatomy of a brand and how startups can build a brand that captivates customers and creates loyal users.

A must-read for every entrepreneur. Knowing your metrics is essential to knowing the health of your business.
We have the privilege of meeting with thousands of entrepreneurs every year, and in the course of those discussions are presented with all kinds of numbers, measures, and metrics that illustrate the promise and health of a particular company. Sometimes, however, the metrics may not be the best ...

Check out this amazing Captivology infographic by +Valary Oleinik! It's a quick summary of the principles of my book.

Thank you, Valary!

Condensed Captivology: The Science of Capturing People's Attention by Ben Parr into this infograph to keep the ideas handy. It is a good reminder but can't capture everything from the book. Check it out for an excellent mix of examples and research. I got a number of ideas from the book and a list of things I want to dig into further, so I call this quick read, time well spent.

Some unvarnished thoughts on the modern media landscape...
I've been thinking a lot about media as an industry for the last few months, especially how it has changed since my time at Mashable and where the new generation of media entrepreneurs are missing the mark. We've seen a lot of would-be media empires either collapse or run for the escape hatch.

What is the role of color in storytelling?
What colors should you use if we want our logo to feel more exciting or rugged? Why does Amazon use orange and yellow for its Buy buttons?
