Running Ultra's are fun. Find our how 2014's HK trail running season went and what 2015 has in store for this everyday athlete
In all honesty 2014 brought more pain, blunders and embarrassing DNF’s than trail blazing PB’s. Now almost 6 months into 2015 it seems I’ve managed to continue my strong form into cramping whilst introducing a sprinkling of mediocre success.

Hong Kong Marathon here we go!
After all, I've been running trails, which offer stunning views to keep the eyes occupied, hills to make it acceptable to walk and rocks/ roots randomly placed to make it and adventure to run. I've not been pounding pavement in a continuous fashion for hours on end...

It hurt
It takes something significant to stop a moving object, no matter how slow it might be travelling. After all, when locked in a battle of you against your body and the course what is one more step; just keep taking one more step and eventually the end will come. Mechanical.

So this is happening tomorrow.. oh dear!
..no matter how many tricks I try to make this challenge easier it isn't going to make much difference. I'm still going to have to climb every metre up (and down) and I'm still going to have to take enough steps, be it running, shuffling, walking or even crawling to cover the 100km. Simple as.

Ah, the start to a brand new running season and to kick it off what better than a 50km jaunt around Hong Kong Island... Except that didn't happen
Furious with myself I decided to stick to the plan anyway and get up earlier (though not quite as early) and go run part of the course in anger. I hadn't done any running for three weeks so the 50km was pushing it anyway. Every cloud and all that...

First race of the year down. King of the Hills Half Marathon. Challenging (more for the barrage of physical abuse from the trail) but a good time overall!

Worth that beer!
The race went out all guns blazing and it was hard enough keeping on the actual trail and to not get shoved in the bushes, let alone keep up the blistering pace that was set. Runners were attempting to run past at every opportunity - this included dives through bushes and around trees rather than on the steps or trail just to gain one further position.

Attempt 2 of the Beer Mile. Follow us for the journey from 12-min down to sub 8-min.
Whilst, this clearly is not Man vs Food, (this is Man v Laps & Lager), the competitive ‘eating/drinking’ aspect of this challenge should not be scoffed at. The official world record for the beer mile is sub 5 minutes and I challenge anyone to drink 4 cans of any soda drink in that time, let alone running a mile at the same time.

Beer Mile - Day 1. An all out assault on sub a 7:44 beer mile.
In it’s simplest form the Beer Mile is drinking 4 cans of beer over the course of one mile.  In reality this translates to beer, 400m, beer, 400m, beer, 400m, beer, 410m.  There is a ten meter zone where the beer must be consumed, and if you throw up at any time during the mile you must complete an extra lap-effectively putting a reasonable time out of reach

In case you missed it - the first #ultra #trailrunning race of the #hongkong season didn't start with a successful bang but more like a stutter..
Furious with myself I decided to stick to the plan anyway and get up earlier (though not quite as early) and go run part of the course in anger. I hadn't done any running for three weeks so the 50km was pushing it anyway. Every cloud and all that...

Am I ready for another 50km after not running for three weeks? We'll find out this Saturday #themediocreathlete
The last time I ran this distance was the MSIG Sai Kung 50km in March earlier this year - that is a race that did not go as planned so the concern is I haven't learnt my lesson and I'm going to be in a world of hurt once again! What's the saying, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me"? Guess come Saturday we'll see who the fool is...
