"The drive up to Mt. Hood Meadows featured an ambitious Subaru risking life and limb to catch some freshies at one end of the risk-reward curve and a series of slow moving soccer moms at the other, and a host of skier dads who forgot to chain up in between. And it wasn’t so much “in-between” as “within a half-mile of Meadows,” when stopping to chain up means everyone behind you stops for you to chain up."

Introduction
I was born in the Amazon Housing Project of Eugene, Oregon in the 1960s. My family moved to upstate New York after my father got a job at SUNY Albany, where he eventually became chairman of the biology department. My mother worked in the same department, organizing the labs and many other things. I grew up playing baseball in Guilderland, exploring the Adirondacks and skiing in Vermont. After graduating from the University of Virginia, I worked as a land-scraper and sports editor in Altamont, New York, a ski bum in Vermont, a pizza delivery guy in New Orleans and a deckhand on a fishing boat in Alaska. Fishing paid well and offered the most freedom, so I was a fisherman for five years. I got back into journalism in 1995, working at the Stranger through 1999. From there I traveled with my wife to Malawi, where she volunteered at the medical school and I freelanced and got a lot of flat tires on my bicycle. In 2000 we returned to Portland, where I helped launch the Portland Tribune, served short stints at Willamette Week, the Portland Business Journal and Portland Monthly Magazine and served as managing editor of Oregon Business Magazine. My new media project is shredhood.org, a news, information and entertainment site covering the vibrant snow sports scene on Mount Hood. I live in a gorgeous Portland neighborhood with my wife Christina Nicolaidis and three beautiful children who keep me active, alert and humble.
