People are looking for landscapes that are low maintenance and don't take much water. Even here in Portland, where the rain is plentiful and "authenticity" is valued, the demand for artificial lawns is growing rapidly. Before you rip out the JB Sod and go synthetic there are some things you should know and consider.

Too busy to work on your website? Maybe...

But you can never be too busy to work on getting reviews

Here is why:

http://www.triple16.com/landscape-marketing-blog/get-5-star-reviews-the-best-thing-for-your-online-marketing-right-now
Now is the time for two very important things. One is the focus of this post, and I will cover the second in my next (when I can find the time!) No matter how busy you are, now is the time to be getting reviews. You can never be too busy to earn and ask for 5 star reviews of your landscaping business. There are 3 good reasons to make this a priority starting yesterday:

An engineer and his "square foot garden"

Mel Bartholomew, creator of the "square foot garden" has died at age 84. As a retired engineer Bartholomew decided to bring an engineers order to gardening.  He felt that by dividing the garden into 1 square foot sections, and planting into those sections different vegetables, he would reduce the amount of weeding and watering that a conventional garden needed. He named his technique, "The Square Foot Garden", and the book by the same name has sold 2.5 million copies.

His interest in gardening grew in the 1970's when an instructor at a class on composting failed to show up. Instead of disbanding he and his classmates organized a single row garden in a vacant lot. As the weeding chores grew with the onslaught of summer, he began to wonder if their was a better way. Thus, the Square Foot Gardening revolution had begun from a desire to weed less.

Here at our garden center some people still ask about, and try square foot gardening. I find the process too tedious, as the setting up and maintaining of a garden of such small sections requires much work, as much as the weeding was. I also like my garden a bit chaotic as that seems more in tune with nature. Still, there is no doubt that Mel Bartholomew changed the world of home food gardening for the better. Anything that gets those engineers outside and digging in the dirt must be OK.

Mr. Bartholomew’s innovation saved water and space by folding traditional rows of vegetables into a raised bed that could fit on porches, patios, decks or roofs.

Send Roof Water Into the Sewer System?

If so, you are missing a great opportunity. That water can be dispersed in a better way, even used later. Here are some great ways to handle it:

Landscape Designer at Ross NW Watergardens. I also blog about marketing landscape businesses online at triple16.com.
Introduction
As teenager my father would wake me at 4am to get ready for work. You have to get up early to beat the Phoenix summer heat. I would install irrigation timers in massive subdivisions all day and fall asleep in the truck on the way home.  Amazingly, that start in the family business didn't send me running away screaming.

Now we are in Portland, Oregon and I choose to get up early to get the crews out the door. Time to make a landscape great! We design great gardens, craft them out of stone, dirt, and plants, and then keep them looking fantastic for years.

I am the Landscape Designer at Ross NW Watergardens a Portland area landscape design/build firm. It's pretty exciting stuff.

Check out what we do here, and who we are and what we believe in at our Portland Landscape Blog. You will find landscaping design advice, project profiles, and get a little glimpse into our world.

If you are in the Portland are I would love to meet you in person. Lets walk your property and discuss what it could be. I would love to see your renovated garden in our portfolio. Schedule a free landscape consultation today and get your landscape on the road to greatness! You can find me at Ross NW Watergardens at 7607 SE 104th Ave, Portland, Oregon 97266. Reach us at (503)761-3683.

Joel at JCW Cleaning cleaned my home's windows inside and out. They look great and the price was very fair.

My favorite Portland-area nursery to just wander. Ok, maybe not wander (it is not very big!) but browse. Beautiful space with unusual plants.

Julie helped us engineer improvements on a client's retaining wall. She was extremely responsive, reasonably priced, and took a flexible approach to the project. I highly recommend her services and Ross NW Watergardens will use her for engineering walls in the future.

We order LED low voltage lights from Landscape Lighting World for many of our projects. The quality and price are excellent. The styling is conservative, which means we can easily use them on many projects. Highly recommended!

Excellent place to get bark dust and blended soils. They also have a very nice 1/4"- gravel mix that we at Ross NW Watergardens use a lot. They are one our primary suppliers on the east side of town.
