A New FDA Approved Procedure to Improve Reading Vision
http://www.belmonteyecenter.com

The AcuFocus, Kamra Corneal Inlay is a device that is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses in patients that are over 40 years of age and have good distance vision without glasses but have problems focusing up close as a consequence of presbyopia (the age related inability to focus at near when we reach our 40s and 50s).  The Kamra Inlay received FDA approval for use in the U.S. in April of 2015. The inlay itself is a miniscule, a 3.8mm diameter disc with 8,400 micro perforations, tiny holes that range in size from 5μm to 11μm. The perforations work like a pinhole camera to make near vision clearer and sharper without compromising vision at distance.  The disc is 5μm thick (half the thickness of food storage cling wrap) and has a 1.6mm central opening which is aligned with the center of the pupil when the inlay is put in place.
The Kamra Inlay procedure is performed only on the patient’s non-dominant eye. During the procedure, a femtosecond laser creates a tiny, central flap on the cornea at a depth of 200μm, much like the flap in a LASIK procedure.  The inlay is set in place and then centrally aligned.  Afterwards, the corneal flap is set back into position and held in place by the eye’s own hydrostatic pressure.  Vision improves fairly rapidly although some neuroadaptation is required for the eyes to adjust post operatively.
More than 20,000 Kamra inlay procedures have been performed to date, world-wide, providing considerable data to attest to its safety and efficacy.  Another advantage to the Kamra Inlay procedure is that the inlay can quite easily be removed for the few patients that may not be happy with the visual outcome. Call the Belmont Eye Center now to schedule a complementary evaluation and find out more about the Kamra Inlay.
