After being out of competitive high school sports for a while I was looking for a place to get back into the mindset of being healthy. When I found Beach Cities Martial Art I signed up for the introductory classes. From the moment I walked in I was treated with respect and looked at as a student, not just a source of income which I have felt at gyms. The other students have been a wonderful support system and have been welcoming and encouraging. Not only have they helped me learn but they have helped to make me feel welcome. I look forward to my classes after a long day of work. I know that I am going to be able to focus my energy into learning and working out. I leave class knowing that I was able to push myself physically and mentally. One of my favorite aspects is that we are not just learning the how but we are learning the why of the techniques. I do not feel like we are mindlessly going through the motions, every class I am fully mentally engaged. I would suggest Beach Cities Martial arts to all levels of students if you are willing to work hard and come with a positive outlook.

I have join L..A. Budo because it is a fun and safe place to learn Martial Arts, The instructor David Dow make you work hard and make you earn your Belts. When I first join I thought that I was just going to get my White Belt, But instructor David just do not give you the White belt you have to earn, Which give me more confidence in myself and made me pride of myself for earning my White belt. unlike other Martial Arts places who just give you your white belt, which would not make a person proud of there self because they did not earn it. David Dow and his other staff and good at what they do and they make sure that you learn and complish your goals. They work hard with you to help you build your self up and make you a strong person with your mind and body. I would recommend this place to anyone who want to learn and to have fun and make new friends.

I have been training at BCMA for eight months now. In that time, I have become a different person physically and mentally. I lost 10 pounds in 3 months and have now gained it back as muscle. The classes are designed to get the best physical experience out of martial arts while still stressing technique. Within the first week I was doing live sparring in Jiu Jitsu, getting repeatedly put into submissions and learning how to escape them and later apply them. Master Dow is a brilliant instructor, and knows the answer to any question about grappling that I ask him. The other two Jiu Jitsu instructors, Jason and Ashkin, are extremely knowledgeable too, and I have learned so much from them. The Muay Thai program is also very well-designed, focusing on fundamentals and movement, making every lesson directly applicable. Having the opportunity to train 5 days a week has motivated me to take my training to the next level, and I ask Master Dow(a former body builder) all the time for fitness, diet, and training advice. BCMA is now an important part of my life that I can't imagine living without.

I decided to put my son Ryan (4yrs old) in a martial arts class because he was a completely typical boy...crazy energy at home, very short attention span, physical, etc. I found L.A. Budo, along with Dawn's Karate Kids, near my house. I made appointments for Ryan to try both and see which one he liked better. Our free class at Dawn's didn't go very well. They didn't give him any guidance on how he was expected to act in the class, or what he was supposed to do. He got thrown out of the trial class for not listening and having any discipline (I thought that's what he was supposed to gain from attending their classes!). Ryan cried. At L.A. Budo, Master Dow provides every new student with a free private 30 minute introduction to the studio, where he teaches the kids how they are supposed to behave, some general martial arts moves, and the proper responses. This really helped Ryan feel comfortable and know what he was supposed to do at his first class. It has been 6 months now (attending 2x a week), and I am amazed at Ryan's transformation. Some of it comes with maturity (he's turning 5 in 2 months), however most of it is because of this studio. He listens, wants to help out at home so he can get more stripes on his belt in class, has learned to control his emotions and not hit his friends at school, and is in great physical shape. This morning after I asked him to put his shoes on for school, he replied "yes ma'am." I certainly didn't teach him that, but Master Dow teaches that response to the kids as one of the seven words of respect. I don't often write reviews, however I truly feel that this studio has been a remarkable addition to our lives. Plus, it is really fun! Each day Mater Dow plays at least 2 games with the kids, making them work hard but also making them laugh and have fun...along with the dozens of running laps, low crawling, crab walks, bear walks, push-ups, sit-ups, splits, punches, and kicks he makes them do:) It is a joy for me to watch and Ryan loves it. I encourage everyone I know to try the studio out. You will love it, and your children will too.

I love this gym! They keep a strict curriculum so I always know where I am and what I need to work on. They give me an experience I haven't had at any other martial arts school! The style allows for quick learning and a detailed look at everything you do. Definitely the best martial arts school that I've signed up for!

This school is a gem! My daughter started the program with Master David Dow a couple of years ago as part of an after school program at Juan de Anza Elementary. My daughter, who has never participated in any sport, begged me to sign her up. I was amazed at how excited she was about learning Martial Arts. She felt empowered! I noticed I had a more confident, fearless, and motivated daughter. I never expected theses kind of results from a martial arts class. At the completion of the after school program, Master Dow offered my daughter the opportunity to train FREE for a month and even included a free uniform! I jumped at the opportunity only because my daughter was so committed to learning the martial path. What I've come to love about the school, staff, and program is the commitment to not only providing an age-appropriate curriculum, but also the standard of excellence that is upheld among the students. Beach Cities Martial Arts is teaching my daughter more than punching and kicking. In addition to the outstanding martial arts training, my daughter is also learning invaluable leadership principles, self-discipline, perseverance, and delayed gratification- you can't put a price tag on these! I am happy to say that Beach Cities Martial Arts, under the leadership of Master David Dow, is re-enforcing the strengths and values that we are teaching my daughter at home. I'm excited for my daughter's continued growth and development as a Martial Artist and achievement of her Black Belt within the next few years.

https://youtu.be/ieEC4D_DEWM 10-14 year olds are the smartest students in the school. Yes, they are smarter than most adults!
They are also physically competent and can excel in most physical challenges that are presented to them. The problem is they are so focused on what is socially acceptable that they have a hard time keeping themselves emotionally driven to the task at hand.
The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that nurtures their social and emotional instability while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.
