Sailing is one of those sports you can take up later in life and gain an enormous amount of satisfaction from. You don't need to be the 'sporty' type to get started either. Many of the beginners who go sailing with Bay Sea School in Morecambe are in their 40's 50' & 60s and beyond!

John and Deirdre the sailing instructors at Bay Sea School both learnt to sail as adults. John learnt through trial and error and by reading books but it took him 9 months to figure it all out! Deirdre started with a beginners keelboat course at the Irish National Sailing School in Dublin and had the basics sorted within a few days.

If you think you'd like to learn to sail but want to try it out before committing to a 2-day beginners course, book a short Taster FunSail with Bay Sea School. You'll experience the thrill of sailing a small yacht or keelboat on the sea in North West UK with fabulous views of the Lake District Hills across stunning Morecambe Bay.

If you're dreaming of warmer weather and outdoor leisure activities, why not plan a 2-day learn to sail course with Bay Sea School in Morecambe? Courses run from April to September and can be booked now online.

You're very lucky in the North West of England because you can learn to sail on the sea in a small yacht, sometimes called a keelboat. There are very few RYA sailing centres offering this ideal option for adult beginners & improvers.

Keelboats really are perfect boats for adults wanting to learn the basic sailing skills such as how to tack and gybe as both crew and skipper. The courses also teach how to adjust the sails for all points of sail.

You get a great feel for sailing when you learn on a smaller yacht or keelboat because they are fairly light and manoeuvrable. And, they're much more stable and forgiving than smaller dinghies which have a habit of tipping you out into the sea at your first mistake!

With Bay Sea School you stay safely in the boat throughout your sailing course. Kids love learning to sail in dinghies but most adults really appreciate the benefits of staying dry while learning to sail in a keelboat. Find out more by visiting Bay Sea School's website.

3 good reasons to complete your navigation training with the RYA Yachtmaster theory course:
1. Day Skipper is just the beginning.
2. Learn how to stay safe on longer passages.
3. Gain the respect and confidence of your crew.

For many people Day Skipper theory presents a massive syllabus with much to learn. Depending on previous experience it can be quite a big learning curve. So it's hardly surprising that people sometimes think "I'll wait a while before tackling the Yachtmaster theory course". That's a pity because having covered all the main topics at Day Skipper level, Yachtmaster theory mostly refines and develops those key skills. It's also much better to move on to Yachtmaster before you forget all your hard-won Day Skipper skills.

There's a brand NEW course in 2017 for RYA Yachtmaster Theory with much more content to do with planning longer passages. That's the fun bit! It's what lights the candle for us, planning where we might sail next summer and finding secret anchorages to sail to. We know it'll be quiet there because Day Skippers won't know how to work out the tidal range!

If you want your crew to be happy and eager to sail with you, much of that depends on your own competence as the skipper. If you really know what you're doing they'll feel safe and you'll have a happy boat.

On the other hand from the crew's perspective if you don't feel comfortable with your skipper's ability, why don't you learn to navigate yourself? Start with the online Essential Navigation & Seamanship course, it's a great introductory course. Then do the winter Day Skipper theory course. We recommend the classroom course at day skipper level and above for it's much higher completion rate than with the online course. Finally complete the programme with the Yachtmaster theory course.

One of the joys of sea sailing is a magical encouter with dolphins. Here they are accompanying John as he sails across the Bristol channel on an own boat tuition sailing trip.

Some of his Yachtmaster theory students have bought their own yacht and asked him to coach and guide them on their first long journey from Falmouth to Portavadie. You can read all about the passage on John's daily blog https://www.bayseaschool.com/blog

Sailing on the sea is so much better than inland sailing. Feeling the sea air on your face, listening to the waves on the hull and the breathtaking views of the Lake District hills make Morecambe Bay the best place to learn to sail on a yacht in the North of England. Bay Sea School offers 2-day RYA yacht sailing courses for adults from beginner to advanced with award-winning RYA Instructor of the Year John Parlane in charge of all training.

At the annual RYA North West instructor training day RYA Regional Development Officer Adam McGovern welcomed dinghy, windsurfing and powerboat instructors to the wonderful facilities at Tower Wood on Windermere.

A selection of workshops were available for the instructors such as: spinnaker sailing, rig tuning, tidal sailing and how to deal with a complete inversion of a RIB. There was also a chance to try out some new sailing dinghies. What was particularly interesting though was the keen interest in keelboat sailing.

Yachtmaster Instructor & Examiner John Parlane, from Bay Sea School in Morecambe, was invited to present 2 workshops during the day. The first was a short refresher on using a marine VHF radio. Having done the 1-day VHF radio course and gained your operators license it's easy to forget how to use a VHF radio if you're not using one regularly. Now there's a great solution! You can buy the new online course and download it to your computer. It's then yours to dip into whenever you want a refresher. Bay Sea School have a special discount on the online VHF radio course for the 2017 summer sailing season. bayseaschoolwww..com/online-courses/vhf-marine-radio-online

John's afternoon workshop was an introduction to tidal passage planning. There were lots of 😀 and 👍 at the end. They just loved John's friendly and interactive approach.

Rachel Andrews RYA Chief Powerboat Instructor gave an update on developments within the RYA training department. She said there are now 101,000 pages on the RYA website. Perhaps this explains the difficulties complete beginners face when trying to find the best way to learn to sail on the sea in the North West!

Rachel also told the dinghy & powerboat instructors that they should have basic navigation knowledge to at least the level of the Essential Navigation & Seamanship course. This highlights the enormous range of experience and knowledge within the RYA instructor body. Bay Sea School on the North West coast offers an extraordinary high level of expertise for it's adult sailing students!

Here's a link to the online booking page for the Essential Navigation & Seamanship course for any instructors wanting to get started learning the basics of navigation and chartwork right now!

RYA Diesel Engine 1-day course
Good Seamanship is the aspiration of all responsible seafarers. Maintaining your boat's diesel engine and learning simple things to do if it fails at sea are all part of being a good Yachtmaster. In fact if you want to pass your Yachtmaster practical exams you'll be expected to know what this 1-day course teaches you!

The 1-day RYA Diesel Engine maintenance course is an enjoyable hands-on day for all levels. "Diesel engine maintenance is really quite simple when you're shown how." said Louise. You could save yourself hundreds of pounds in servicing costs once you've learnt the basics.

We're very lucky in the UK to have the RNLI to call on. In some countries you'll be charged for a tow back to port. But there are simple things you can do to look after your engine and reduce the number of unnecessary call-outs. The 1-day Diesel Engine course shows you some common problems and what you can do to fix them yourself. The RNLI aren't meant to be used as a free breakdown service!
