India's Organic Farming Mission: Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Others Follow Suit after Sikkim. Bayan Energy is on the mission of Organic Fertiliser.
When Sikkim spearheaded its organic farming mission in 2003, we could have only hoped that it would have a rippled effect on the rest of India. The objective of the mission was to adopt and implement the practises of organic farming with a systemic approach, develop linkage between the farmers and the market with intervention of certification agencies, and most of all, march towards a sustainable living. The good news is that this organic mission has nudged the other states to take measures as well, and with the Government's full support, some of them are making prominent changes to go chemical free and make the practise sustainable and profitable. After Sikkim, India is promoting a "cluster" approach for chemical-free farming across the country. More and more cultivated areas are being dedicated for organic farming, with an aim to hit 10 lakh hectares by 2017-18. Many states have already started forming organic farming zones in support of this initiative, such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.

Maharashtra seems to be a frontrunner in this organic mission with the government not just focusing on chemical free farming, but also on bringing down expenses of farming, and assuring better financial returns to the farmers. The state has allotted over 18,000 hectares for organic farming.

Under the 'Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana' (traditional agriculture development plan) of the Agriculture Ministry, every farmer will be provided Rs 20,000 per acre for buying seeds, harvesting the crops and transporting the produce to the market. The government has allocated a budget of Rs 297 crore under the scheme for 2016-17. An additional amount has also been set aside for Northeast Indian states for organic practises.

It has taken Sikkim over a decade to convert itself into a fully organic state. Sikkim Organic Mission's executive director Dr Anbalagan had said in an earlier report, "Around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land has been gradually converted to certified organic land by implementing organic practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production."

Here's hoping that in another decade's time, several states in India are chemical free, following a sustainable and healthier way of life.

India’s Wind Energy Sector To Attract $15 Billion Investment By 2020

Upbeat on the improved regulatory and financial environment, investors are expected to pour over $15 billion into India’s wind energy sector by 2020, a report by ratings and research firm CRISIL has stated.

CRISIL expects that India will add 4 GW wind energy capacity every year over the next 5 years, translating into a total investment of over $15 billion. The firm stated in a recent report that the feed-in tariffs for wind energy projects has declined significantly and were fast approaching grid parity which would attract fresh investors to the sector.

It is noticeable that India has never added more than 3.2 GW wind energy capacity in a financial year. The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association expects that 3.5 GW capacity would be added in this financial year.

The Indian government has pledged the continuation of critical incentives for the wind energy sector, such as accelerated depreciation and generation-based incentive. The government is also planning to launch the National Wind Energy Mission which would accelerate the development of wind energy projects and open the offshore wind energy sector as well. The government is also expected to push utilities to procure more renewable energy.

These initiatives by the government have already started to reap results. Indian and international project developers have pledged to add over 47 GW of new wind energy capacity by 2022. The Indian government has set a target to install 60 GW worth of wind energy capacity by 2022. This means that around 37 GW capacity would have to be added by March-end 2022.
