"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years." --Mark Twain

Is Dad a Hemingway fan? Perhaps he'd love a first edition "The Old Man and the Sea" on his shelf. Our New York gallery has updated their Madison Avenue window display with a selection of Father's Day favorites. Stop by and take a look.madison-window

Today is the 250th anniversary of the first meeting between James Boswell and Samuel Johnson. Fittingly, they met in the back parlor of a London bookshop. Well aware of Johnson’s biases, upon introduction Boswell apologized for his place of birth. He even said, “I do indeed come from Scotland, but I cannot help it.”

Despite Johnson’s prejudices against his northern neighbors, the pair became friends. They still have the best known biographer/subject relationship in literature. James Boswell and Samuel Johnson eventually traveled together to Scotland, obviously giving rise to literature’s buddy-comedy-road-trip genre.
