Today only at Fry's: HP Desktop, $65. Roughly equivalent Intel NUC: $550.

One or both of these prices are just sad.

Yesterday in Portland Oregon USA: record high of 102°. This morning in Portland: intense hailstorm.

This is what global warming induced climate change looks like, folks. Get ready for a lot more of it.

"How does one get a controlling terminal? Nobody knows, this is a great mystery." -- https://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/lk/lk-10.html

I'm working on fixing up someone's Rust reimplementation of getpass(3) <http://github.com/BartMassey/rustastic-password>. It would be nice to be able to read the password from the terminal when /dev/tty is unavailable for some reason. I have chosen to check whether stderr is a terminal, and if so read from that. (I don't want to read from stdin, because it may be connected by a pipe or redirection to input data, which could be a mess; I don't want to write the prompt to stdout for the same reason but even more so.)

Question: Reading from file descriptor 2 seems to work on Linux (although trying to read from the stderr FILE * does not). Is this a POSIX-blessed thing? Does it work on other UNIX implementations? My suspicion is that it works everywhere, but POSIX says nothing about it.

Second question: is this the right thing to do? I would think so, but maybe there's a corner case I'm forgetting.

Put up an Open Source Bridge talk proposal just now: http://opensourcebridge.org/proposals/1726 . Hoping to talk about our ChaosKey open-hardware random number generator.

Let me know if there's something else you think I should be talking about this summer.

"[Existentially quantified types] can be used to recreate certain concepts from the so-called 'Object Oriented Paradigm', a school of thought popularized in the late 80s that attempted to decompose programming logic into anthropomorphic entities and actions instead of the modern equational treatment. Recreating this model in Haskell is widely considered to be an antipattern." -- Stephen Diehl, "What I Wish I Knew When Learning Haskell"
