Saturday, 23rd May produced an amazing afternoon for the lucky singers that attended the singing Workshop at Crossway Church Hall, Barry.  Kate Woolveridge, mezzo soprano and motivational coach got us off to a great start by asking us to make an amazing range of sounds and facial expressions – which we did!!!  At this point there was more laughter than music!
What followed next was an in-depth but fun exploration of two songs:  The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre, which he originally wrote for a film, using the words of Kipling.  When his song was unused by the film company, Eric used it to sing his baby son to sleep (in his words – “less than 50% success rate!”).  California Dreamin’, was written by John and Michelle Phillips and, of course, made famous by the folk rock group The Mamas and The Papas back in 1966.  The Seal Lullaby is soft and dreamy, the words and music swelling and receding like the waves of the sea.  California Dreamin’ is a light and lively love song.  These two songs will feature strongly in our forthcoming recitals and concerts.
The singers were treated to a buffet during the afternoon and the Workshop finished with a big Thank You to Kate for taking such an inspirational Workshop and also to Emma Arscott for accompanying us on the piano.  A big Thank You too, to all who attended and helped the afternoon run so well.  It is hoped to repeat the event next year.
Watch this space for our next event – a summer concert to be held in Crossway Church on Friday, 19th June at 7pm.  Ticket arrangements will be announced soon.
