You've probably seen digital marketing trends rise and fall before. One minute, everyone in the industry is pushing strategies or techniques, stating that they'll improve our online presences. The next, puts out a video, telling marketers that they'll be penalized if they use these same techniques.
Marketers are always looking for that "quick fix" when it comes to SEO and content marketing. But there's no such thing. In fact, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it (and then no one would rank #1). But how can you spot a trend and avoid these groupthink traps?

If you're new here, that's what you might be asking yourself. Somebody smart told you to come here, and we're glad you did. But it's important to know why your time might be better spent here than in LinkedIn Groups.
5 Important Reasons:
1. Google indexes your content shared in public Communities and elsewhere on Google+ almost immediately, which means it shows up in search results within minutes.
2. You can take advantage of Hangouts either as a host or a participant. Use them to present compelling content and build a raving fan base of followers, some of whom turn into customers and clients.
3. You can create Events and invite a Community. LinkedIn killed its Events app months ago, much to the chagrin of users.
4. Google+ Communities, like the rest of Google+, integrate seamlessly with other Google features that make up the Google ecosystem. Not so with LinkedIn.
5. Within Communities, you can communicate with others as a brand and have conversations with influential thought leaders and other industry experts.
Check out my blog post that lists a total of 19 reasons on how Google+ Communities can help build your small business. It's at http://publicityhound.com/blog/19-ways-google-communities-can-help-grow-your-business

You already realized, or should realize that 90% of all searches are local. You know or should know that you need a Facebook presence for your small business and you assume that you need Google+ as well. You probably wonder why you should put much effort into Google+, to most it seems like a vast ghost town. Most of your friends in real life and from Facebook are not here.
You may have heard the arguments that Google+ will catch on and Facebook may go the way of Myspace – and perhaps this is true, and if that ever happened having a robust early presence would make sense. We do not bet on that outcome, however, that seems a tenuous reason to invest your limited time.
The real reason to invest time in developing content and relationships in Google+ is twofold I believe.
First, it is Google, and Google still rules the search engine market. Google has placed a premium on connecting all of their various services. Relevance on Google+ plays a role in what search results are served. Of course factors that play into this are your relationship with the person doing the search, their relationship with others you have a relationship with as well as all the standard (and sometimes mystical) factors that render a result. I am convinced, although there is no direct proof, that Google uses an algorithm that looks at something akin to “six degrees of separation” as a factor when serving results.
Lets say a potential customer has just 5 Google+ friends and seldom uses Google+ specifically, but they do use an Android phone and they do perform searches on that phone – perhaps with their GPS tools running. When they search for a business like yours, and your business main webpage is indexed, you will appear in the SERP. The question that is important is how do you appear and how often?
If we assume that your potential customer has some level of connection to someone that is connected to you – then it is logical to assume, based upon tidbits of data Google releases on this, that they may in fact see more of your content, from more of your web presence in the SERP……..this is a good thing.
Building a solid Google+ presence allows you to build some of those connections that will expand your circle of “six degrees separated” and enable you to tie together all of your other web marketing and engagement activities on Pinterest, Facebook your site etc, etc. into a branded identity for Google to see and serve to your customers.
