The Cane Swallower

Walking around the Goroka Show is an experience of its own. At a certain point, after the floodgates open and lots of locals pour in, the dynamic changes dramatically. What was an overwhelming cultural experience becomes an overwhelming cultural experience with thousands of people in circles around local tribes.

As I was walking around, someone stopped me to show me this guy's ability to swallow Kanda (cane). Think of it as similar to sword swallowing that you might see at the circus or performed by a magician. The cane can be 2-3m long and bent in a U-shape. Now, the person might not swallow the whole thing, but certainly will swallow more than enough to be every bit as impressed as seeing someone swallow a sword.

Asaro Mudmen

What evil darkness lurks in the heart of men? Many troubled thoughts. Such as the thoughts I'm having now looking at this creepy mudman.

The masks the mudmen wear weigh up to 10kg (22lbs!), and are rather unwieldy to wear. Believe me, I tried! Bamboo spiked fingers though? Cool and scary at the same time.

The Huli Wigman Of Papua New Guinea

The Huli are, without a doubt, one of the most impressive tribes in Papua New Guinea. They are also one of the largest. Pinning an accurate number down is quite difficult, but varying online sources say the Huli population is anywhere from 90,000 to 300,000-400,000.

The Huli take great pride in their elaborate decorations. Their colorful displays are inspired in part by the equally magnificent Birds-of-Paradise. If you're not familiar with the Birds-of-Paradise, they're well worth checking out as they are some of nature's most colorful and unique birds.

Out For An Evening Mow

The Faroe Islands has many great examples of traditional turf roof houses. In the capital city of Torshavn, slowly they are disappearing in favor of homes built in a more modern style. While you can see them in other Scandinavian countries, somehow it feels a bit more defining for the Faroes.

Navigating Tansen

It's always fun to walk through a town, village, city when traveling. Sometimes you can get lost in these giant cities, and sometimes I try to get lost only to find myself later.

Pilgrims Of Ethiopia Part 4

Black and White or Color? Sometimes it can be a tough call. I rented a Leica Model M Monochrome to take with me for a short trip to Cuba since the camera only shoots in black and white. I felt that, of all the places where a black and white photo might seem befitting of its environment, it would be a country like Cuba or North Korea which are semi-trapped in the 1950s. It is a slight coincidence that the 1950s are also when the first color tv broadcasts started to occur in the US.

So Nice To See You!

While penguins tend to steal the show in Antarctica, it's easy to forget that there's plenty of other sea life to be seen. This crabeater seal looked liked it wanted to invite me onto the ice with a bit of a friendly smile. That probably wouldn't have been a good ideal for a number of reasons, but I sure do enjoy seeing what appears to be a friendly seal!

Green And Gloomy

While it looks a bit gloomy at the moment, most of the time it was actually quite pleasant and beautiful. The North Atlantic can be a bit broody at times, but for my summertime visit I can't really complain. Sure there was some light rain, but nothing that really dampened any of my plans.

The Sadhus Of Nepal - Part 3

There are four phases in the life of a Hindu. Initially a Hindu is in what's called the Brahmacharya (student) phase, until they are 24 years old. During this time they focus on education and includes the practice of celibacy. The next stage of life is Grihastha (household), and lasts another 24 years. It's when a Hindu gets married, maintains a family and raises children.

Happy Sudanese Man

After visiting the ruins of Musawwarat es-Sufra, a large temple complex some 180km northeast of Khartoum, I came across this gentleman. While there was a language barrier, this is where having a guide comes in handy. I don't remember if there was a reason he was particularly happy or not, but maybe he's just a happy guy.
