In general, I love Tapas bars. It's nice to step outside of your day to day likes and dislikes and try something new without having to order a big dish. Barlata is a bright, noisy place on a Saturday night but not so loud that you can't hear your dinner companions. Our waiter was wonderful. He looked a bit like Anthony Bourdain and was very conscientious of our friends who have allergies and made sure every dish was safe without being overly dramatic about it. We probably ordered one of everything on the menu and we were not disappointed. From olives to mussels to short ribs, everything was prepared and served beautifully. Our out of town dinner guests were delighted. The cocktails were also delicious and my friend from Scotland was crazy about the Bee's Knee's.

I really enjoyed Barlata. Their menu has a large variety of option to choose from and their portions (depending on what you get) are more than other small plate/tapas style restaurants. The service was a little slow but it seemed like they were short handed. The food spoke for itself. Very authentic and fresh flavors. I thought the cocktails were a little overpriced for the little amount served but the wine list made up for that. We recently enjoyed another great experience at Barlata. This time we sat at the bar and loved talking with the bar tenders who had tons of knowledge not only about the drinks but about the food. Having great staff and great food make the experience even better.

A bit pricey but we had a great time eating tapas and paella! We had made a reservation and it appeared they were working out some kinks as they had no table close to being ready so we sat in the bar area which is a lot of fun.

First time wasn't good at all, the paella rice was hard with average flavor. However they were at the taste master event and the black paella seafood was my favorite dish, I couldn't get enough. Back on my list of favorite restaurants in Austin.

This place was so great. We came in because our first choice was too crowded for a quick Thursday dinner and we lacked our usual preparation. A little loud, but the food was so amazing! Shrimp Ajillo, Paella Negre, and the Patats Bravas were all so amazing. We asked for more bread so we could dip them in the Shrimp and garlic oil. The only thing better than the food was the service. I didn't catch our waitresses name, but she was so personable and made perfect recommendations. The wine was delicious, and we finished off with the Barlata Tarta. Again, our waitress came through with a recommendation to change the ice cream to the olorosso sherry and she was right. 100% loved it! Will be back, but not frequently due to the cost.

Perfect location for a casual date night. The interior is beautifully decorated and I love that you can see into the kitchen. We ordered the baby squid with ink sauce, the bravas, the pig's feet terrine, the grilled chorizo, the grilled beef heart, the tortilla with chorizo, and the brisket canelones. Winner winner chicken dinner goes to....the stuffed baby squid in ink sauce. WOW! I've had this dish once before and when I saw it on the menu I had to order it. Ermagherd. I asked for MORE bread to dip in the squid ink sauce. The bravas were prepared differently. Instead of being fried and then tossed in the sauce, they used a fresher approach. Downside? The potatoes were so hot that the allioli started breaking apart and the tomato wasn't very spicy. The chorizo was average...it didn't have a wow factor but it wasn't bad. I was not a fan of the garbanzo beans. Grilled beef heart was absolutely DELISH! Super lean and not tough at all. It was grilled well and the sauce that accompanied it worked really well. The tortilla was okay. I make them at home often and it wasn't any better here. It's not something I would order in the future. Brisket canelones...woah! They were gone in seconds. Inhaled it...because it was that good. There was a nice cheesy crust on top. Everything worked. The sauce, the cheese, and the brisket. Overall a great dish. I wish I passed on the pig's feet terrine. It's one of my favorite dishes but this one was sub-par. The portion is huge. Plus it's not as much of a terrine since it fell apart as soon as my fork touched it. The sauce was pretty awful too. Blech! Upside to some of the disappointing dishes was the service. Tom S., our waiter, was really helpful and so nice. He was extremely patient when I asked questions about the dishes and even helped me pick out some really nice wines to drink. I definitely will be back. Now I know what dishes to avoid and what new ones I want to try.

Barlata Tapas Bar is always a fun and tasty experience. Standouts are the Ceviche, with the most tender octopus ever, patatas bravas, crunchy and delicious and the Arros Negre is my forever favorite. Seasonal cocktails are a fun add to the mix, but I love that they have Estrella Damm on draft. Try the Cava porron if you are with a fun loving group, take a swig and keep passing it along...;)

(4 May 2014, Sunday, 1015 pm) We just returned from Barlata, in which we were all very disappointed in the service, food and there was nothing that reminded any of us like we were in Spain. We had a party of six, my mother and her sister who is recently visiting us from Madrid for a few months, both are from Granada, Andalusia, Spain; our friends who are married both are from Spanish speaking countries; my father and I. We all have lived, visited and been to Spain many times in the past fifty years or so. The cuisine in which Barlata tried to emulate as being from Spain, they have failed drastically. The appetizers are nothing like having something from Spain. We were all very disappointed with the entire establishment. The hostess stated that they never received our reservations in which I called twice 24 hours in advance leaving two sets of numbers in which I never received any messages from them on their recorder. While we were in the entrance of the restaurant trying to be seated, I noticed that their phone was ringing off the hook and there were a few individuals who work there to include the hostess who were not even attempting to answer the phone or excusing herself from our party to answer it. If I could post photos here, I would display the various items that were ordered for our group. The calamari’s were burnt to a crisp in which it was placed in a small cup about the size of a 10 ounce container in which it was for one person. The waiter informed us that the appetizers would be placed in the middle of the table and everyone would need to reach for the items. Both my mother and my aunt were not pleased with their selection since it was nothing like what it was advertised in the menu. The waiter tried to inform the both of them that this was an authentic dish from Spain. We were all flabbergasted that he attempted to convince us that this is how it was served in Spain. I have been to some third world countries in Africa in which the restaurants were more authentic of being from Spain than Barlata tried of emulating an establishment from the old country. When we were ready to pay the waiter informed us that he could not have separate bills because they can only charge up to one person per table. The waiter did not know how to pay for the meals after he was given a credit card and cash at the same time. He handed us one bill since he could not have the meals on separate receipts to hand us. Barlata will not see us again and we will inform all of our Spanish friends who are from Spain and many other Spanish speaking countries to include individuals who also enjoy the Spanish cuisine from Austin to San Antonio and the surrounding areas not to attempt to go to this establishment.

Catalan-born Olivella has created a unique menu that features a variety of tapas, including latas, classic Spanish appetizers served in small tin cans, as well as larger plates and an impressive array of paella. Each item is a subtle elaboration on a traditional dish.

Excited to cook a whole heritage breed pig @COCHON555 - the most flavorful way to preserve family farms. Join us www.cochon555.com
Created in 2008 in response to the lack of education around heritage breed pigs. The event series started from a thread of conversations where family farmers struggled to educate chefs, restaurants looked to source exceptional ingredients, and consumers sought out responsibly raised proteins.
