Our hotel in Trinidad, Cuba, where we were greeted by a Salsa performance. This +Discover Corps tour I am on is one of the most organized tours I've ever taken, with a fantastic cultural itinerary.

One of the big discoveries on my +Discover Corps tour of Cuba is that lobster is the new chicken. I've had fresh, huge lobsters at least once a day.

In day 2 of my tour with +Discover Corps, local kids pose for me on a bench decorated with artwork created from shards of ceramic tile at Proyecto Fuster in #Havana, #Cuba. There is very little begging here, and these kids only shyly asked for a few coins, but they don't lose their smiles when someone doesn't pay.

The Cuban people are SO friendly and SO happy to see us. This woman keeps the grounds of Plaza de Armas clean and was only too happy to pose for me. She supports six children and works six days a week. Another man, a taxi driver, was SO excited when he learned I am an American. He eagerly questioned whether all Americans can now travel legally to Cuba. I told him not yet, and explained that I am on a specially approved cultural exchange program with +Discover Corps   but that I felt certain all Americans would soon be free to visit Cuba. He said, "I hope so, we want you here - we NEED you here.

Tropical fruit stand near the Spanish colonial town of Trinidad, Cuba. Our +Discover Corps tour has a special arrangement with this family, so we gorged on samples of fruit and honey ginger tea, all included in our tour price. And I bought a Guanabana, my favorite all-time fruit, for breakfast tomorrow :-)

After visiting a cigar factory in Havana, our +Discover Corps group leader took us to a cigar & rum shop, where I bought some cigars for  my favorite people back in the States. Since January 16th of this year, it is legal to bring back $400 in Cuban products, $100 of which can be tobacco and liquor.

Our little group of nine spent a few hours walking around Old Havana yesterday, visiting four different plazas, each nicely restored. Many of the old buildings are disintegrating but the government refuses to tear them down, preferring instead to restore them over time. There is a long priority list for restoration, but this is a typical street scene in an area that has already been restored. I am really pleased by the knowledge of our +Discover Corps  tour guides, the professionalism of the company so far.

Introduction
After years of working 70 hours a week at jobs I detested, I felt like the proverbial "hole in the donut" - solid on the outside, but empty on the inside. Searching for meaning in my life, I abandoned a successful but unsatisfying career and set out on a six-month solo backpacking trip around the world, during which I pursued my true passions of travel, writing, and photography. My travel blog, http://holeinthedonut.com, was initially begun as a means to document my round-the-world trip, but by the time I returned to the States I was determined to remake myself into a travel writer, therefore I continued to travel and write about my destinations. These days I am on the road more than 60% of the time and I write about destinations, people I meet along the way, and the spiritual lessons that come from travel. It's all about being true to oneself.
