Clinically referred to as #urticaria, #hives can appear on the arms, legs, back or abdomen and may stand alone or join together to form a larger area. Hives may itch, burn or sting and may be very uncomfortable, especially for a child.

If you or your child has developed hives multiple times, or if the hives have persisted for several weeks and you don’t know the cause, it’s time to seek the guidance of an allergist. Dr. Baxter, a board-certified #allergist in #Dallas, can help determine the cause of the hives and help you reduce your risk of developing them in the future.

Treating an #Immune Deficiency
The goal of treatment is to address any active disease or infection and prevent future infections. One of the primary ways to treat an #immunedeficiency is through infusions of #gammaglobulin, the #antibodies found in blood plasma that helps boost immunity against diseases. These infusions provide antibodies that patients cannot produce naturally because of a various immune deficiencies. Infusions can be administered in the office, at home, or (rarely) in a hospital or outpatient facility. In emergencies, they may be given in the ICU.

Dr. Baxter’s office houses an infusion suite where she administers intravenous gammaglobulin to a number of her patients. She is actively following over 40 patients with immune deficiencies. Many patients are relieved to understand why they are different.

#Foodallergy symptoms may be mild (e.g., itchy mouth) or potentially deadly (e.g., #anaphylaxis). FARE has reported that #foodallergy reactions are responsible for more than 200,000 emergency department visits every year.

Food allergy symptoms include itching, sneezing, runny nose, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, #eczema, #hives and swelling of the lips/mouth (also referred to as oral allergy syndrome when it occurs as the only symptom). Another food allergy event is feeling like food is stuck in the esophagus during swallowing, which could be indicative of a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis.
