What happens when a new student creates a huge level gap in your class? A teacher asks the question. I hope you have some advice for her. Please leave any suggestions in the blog comments rather than here, so she is sure to see them. Thanks!

If the new student's level is lower than the rest, I have him or her come fifteen minutes earlier to "catch up", usually for a few weeks or even months. The personal attention almost always closes the gap. If the new student's level is higher than the rest, I suggest a more challenging class, rather than attempting to keep that child from getting bored. In any case, there's always sure to be common ground--areas where the new student and the regular group are equal. Find that common ground, and use it to make all the children feel comfortable!

I have a great big favor to ask! I'm trying to collect information about teacher access to online professional development around the world, for an upcoming webinar. I'd really appreciate it if you could take this survey, and also share it with the teachers in your own network: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FPR2QXF
If you'd like to hear what the survey results are, I hope you'll also join me for the webinar on Saturday, February 8th: http://yltsigevo2014.wordpress.com/
THANK YOU!!!!

TDi's first Advanced Teaching Skills course of 2014 will be Rhyme and Rhythm in ELT with +Jason Levine. This course will look at the integral roles rhyme and rhythm play in English language acquisition and develop participants' knowledge and experience with classroom activities that promote these concepts. We will focus on how to select songs and poems for class, create supplementary materials for pop songs, and write chants based on content in an ELT curriculum. All participants will have exclusive access to ColloTunes songs, lyrics, and activities created by the instructor. For more information, and to register, visit: http://itdi.pro/itdihome/jason.php
