I was fascinated by this as a child.  I wonder how many other nerds like me are out there.

Sahadi's is #1!
Ssometimes its best to score global grub at independent shops that are a little less Whole Foods and Fairway. Here are our favorite international food markets in the city.

Most of the soil in NYC is contaminated with lead, from years of leaded gasoline exhaust settling on everything. Raised beds, with fresh soil, are the way to grow vegetables for eating.

A fabulous place on the old LES. Been there forever, and they kept so many poor people fed during the bad times. Was my "go to" place when I lived on the LES, but I moved out when all the douche-bros started moving in, and they didn't take cards when I lived there. Always large portions and sweet, friendly waitresses (maybe they don't like you bros, judging from some of the comments). May they remain forever (so missing The Hat, my other "go to").

Alas, the $1/piece sushi is no more, but still an inexpensive yet good option - with attentive service and good cocktails. And they take American Express!

I love almost everything about this place - wonderful food and pastries I haven't had since Paris (LOVE their eclairs). Coffee, wine, and wonderful service at tables. Amusing, thoughtful decor. I said almost everything - if they accepted American Express I would change that to an unreserved everything and give them five stars.

A nice enough place, with a good mani-pedi service and (I think) free wifi. Convenient and efficient, if a bit pricier than other salons on Seventh Ave.

Surprisingly good Tex-Mex and great drinks. Attentive table service and a great soundtrack. But (sigh) another place that doesn't take American Express, so I won't be back too often.

Why don't they take American Express? I'd go here much more often if they did.

The worst manicure I've had on Seventh Avenue (not that that's too terrible). The manicurist seemed rushed and the polish was applied rather sloppily. She was very nice and friendly though and this is the only salon I've tried north of Union St - key for when rushing to the subway and in need of a speedy manicure.
