“We can’t price the middle class out of a college education. We can’t do it.”—President Obama on why we've got to prevent interest rates on federal loans from doubling for students. Stand with the President to keep college affordable: http://OFA.BO/bdSQDA

President +Barack Obama, If that's the case, then why did subsidized loans for graduate school get the axe?

If the government didn't offer federal loans, colleges would be forced to lower their tuition. They keep raising it now, because they know students will get loans to pay for it.

I wish if we could have got a Obama here in India. Very good president.

Ankit i think your current leadership is good

a great and humble man he is, he is not like those other americans presidents, there just wan't war.

Why did the Obama & Democrats vote to double loans back in 2007 anyway? We need a leader in the White House, not someone who blame others for his lack of leadership.

oh no?!where is the Chinese?我们中国人都去那了,大家占领啊

Yeah, and should the international students be priced out?

Under President Obama, "hope and change" has failed the youth of America. Half of new college graduates are unemployed or underemployed. Obama wants anybody to pay unless they work for government. Is Michelle on vacation again?

Here's the thing. Talking points and celebrity ISN'T WHAT WE NEED and never was. We have all of that we can stand. We need a president with less inclination for division and more toward unity Less toward spending and more toward cutting and saving. Less toward hand outs and more toward hand ups. Less toward making legislation and more toward enforcing legislation! THAT is the place of the President, after all. To implement and enforce laws.

+Ray Sanders Graduate school is not necessary for you to get a good job. Graduate school should be something that either an employer or research firm pay for if they want you to go, not something the government pays for you to do.

no other american president would had maked it better than obama, insted of invading new countries, he uses his time on building the american economy strong.
i'm sure than his leadership will be known as a very importent periode in the american history

+Mike Albers Why dont you think about that for a second and look at the current class of college graduates. I work for an organization that is hiring a lot of people but we are looking for people who actually graduate with good grades. Even coming from a good school myself and going to others for recruitment, what I see is that half (or in most cases more than half) of the college students nowadays dont spend their time studying and getting good grads but rather they spend their time (and money that could instead be spent paying for school so they dont need as many loans) going to parties and getting drunk. Some of the lack of college graduates getting good jobs is not that the jobs are lacking but instead because the choice of graduates now really sucks. Im not saying this is the only cause, just something to think about because it definitely contributes

As president, no one who is an American should be told that. As president you WORK FOR ALL AMERICANS. Or so until this one.

+Mitchell Miller Well, seeing as how a bachelor's degree these days is about what a h.s diploma was twenty years ago, many people are forced into Master's degree programs in order to be competitive.

Sure, a bachelors will get you in the door, but a master's or higher increases the odds for success. Sure, many grad school programs waive tuition, but not all of them do.

For example, look at places like +Google ... They don't really hire many people who have less than a masters degree.

+Mike Albers Under the previous president we had the same conditions as well. People need to turn off there blinders to the fact that the previous Republican presidency drug this country horribly down and that the current term President has been fighting this same money grubbing fat on the hog Republicans most of his term in office. The president can't do anything for this nation if the Congress is not behind him.

Unemployment was higher during the Bush administration and has been trickling down. What kills the employment potential though is that we have become a service industry country. We continue to let our industry fall further behind the times, our cost of living is extremely high compared to other industrial countries that can offer much more competitive production costs than we can. We continue to let the rich get fatter off our complacency.

Rather than fight the person who is fighting to put a stop to this people should be fighting with that person.

Some here do not understand what's at stake. If Romney wins the election don't be surprised if he fires YOU... ;-) The GOP is like Microsoft, believing they are the greatest, not realizing (ever) that the world is moving on without them!

IT IS NOT THE PRESIDENT'S OR THE GOVERNMENTS JOB TO SUPPLY ANYONE WITH LOANS OR GRANTS FOR EDUCATION!!!!!! so much college and you still don't know THIS???

Sir, in a recession where you're having to import your key staff because of a growing skills shortage (be sure to push this to the opposition), educating your people so that you can fill these gaps yourselves is the answer. The taxes paid will contribute to the national purse and that can only be a good thing.

Thanks again for smacking CISPA down. I'm as keen on cybersecurity as anyone else but you need to use the right tools for the job and a catch-all spynet is not only a huge waste of time, it won't stop hackers.

Another important thing you can do for your economy is address IP reform in a meaningful way. Here's a useful blog post for you to refer to: http://www.wendycockcroftwebdesign.com/blog/blogs/blog1.php/five-ip-myths-and-why-we-shouldn-t-believe-them#item_284

Sort out the IP maximalists and end the monopolies they hold over innovation and watch the economy grow as people work on their ideas, unafraid of being sued by companies set up to shake other companies down for infringement, real or imagined. It's actually cheaper to settle than go to court, and it's costing you billions of dollars in lost tax revenue.

Correction: We shouldn't try to "keep" college affordable. It's NOT affordable right now, as it is. We should be trying to "make" it affordable.

Thank you so much President Barack Obama for your GREAT work !!!

+Ray Sanders if you think you need to be at some place like google, maybe you should first think about getting in the door somewhere else that will pay for your masters degree. A good portion of employeers now will pay for you to continue school, you dont need the government and taxpayers to pay for it for you. I can easily consider myself middle class and I only graduated with a bachelors degree. So can a large portion of the people I graduated with who actually spend their time studying instead of drinking and partying

Dumb deaf and blind is no way to go through life folks. May God open your eyes ... and soon.

You couldn't +d.angus macdonald. I had to work to get here and pay bills, buy my own car, pay off my own loans,. I'm ok with it but clearly, you wouldn't be.

A college education is a privilege that has to be paid for by the person who buys the service. It is not a right that has to be paid for by all the people, many of whom just don't want to go. Stop stealing money from people to give it to somebody else for luxuries.

I find it interesting President Obama is concerned and aggressive on keeping the interest rates down on student loans, yet in July and September of 2007 he was 'Not Voting' on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act.

cutting funding c school, but the state GOP No, the government doesn't have to. But if it wants America to remain competitive, it needs to. Otherwise we'll just turn into a nation of bankrupt "smart" people. (Then people from other countries will rightfully ask, if we're so smart, why can't we get an education without going bankrupt?)

The real problem is college just costs too much; student loan interest caps are just a bandage. it's too vital to later success, so the free market, unfettered, will hike prices until enough people quit going to college. Is this working as intended?

I wouldn't be able to afford my alma mater if I had to start this year, loans or not. And it's supposed to be a low-cost public school, but the state GOP keeps cutting funding (except for football) so it has to come from the students.

Yeah, this whole "self-reliant" thing only works when you've got the tools to do it. And it's only really applicable in an agrarian society. In a centralised global consumer society we have no choice but to cooperate.

If you want less government and fewer agencies and departments you'll have to forgo technology, cheap food and clothing, the national power grid, the armed forces...

You can't operate as a stand-alone in today's world. We're too connected. For this reason education needs to be subsidized or you end up importing your key workers because you can't or won't produce them yourself.

+Mark Gindin I agree with your point in principle, but if the government doesnt at least help people get into a college, then our country will fall behind even further. I think it needs to be redone though. First, grants should not be given out. We should be giving only loans that get paid back and ultimately lead to no cost to the government. Also, it should go to the people who actually showed they deserve it and can pay it back based on the fact that they actually paid the fuck attention in high school and didnt fuck off the whole time. Grants should be only by companies/individuals who want to give the money, not from the taxpayers.

+Mark Gindin In essence, I fully support helping people who come from poor families that can show they are smart and can make a good contribution to society and therefor pay back their student loans to the government

Wendy, GOD gave you tools to be self-sufficient. USE THEM and if you need help ask. But to expect the people to continue to provide for you while doing our best to just get by and provide for our kids and grand-kids is selfish and indecent.

Then just go ahead and buy everyone a Harvard education, then. If its a right, and we will go down the tubes without an educated workforce, make it mandatory that everyone get a free education at Harvard, or Yale, or BYU. Who actually thinks that any society is advanced by the educated people anyway? There are more success stories from those who didn't go than from those who went to college.

I know you'll all be happy that an opposing voice is leaving but my job requires me to pick up prints. Luck to you all.

+Mark Gindin A college education stopped being a privilege a long time ago. Your standard minimum wage job cannot pay the rent on it's own much less pay for the tuition of an education. You can't get your foot in the door for most places these days without a Bachelor's degree. It's not a privilege it's a necessity.

Beatrice, are you on crack? Be reasonable and take your meds.

we support you sir president and ask you to stop this step for sake of students and their education.

+Mark Rondot This is the problem when republicans say he hasnt fulfilled his promises and that he lied. He tried, but cant do shit when a republican dominated congress says no to everything without even trying to compromise

+Beatrice Wilson I work full-time, thank you very much. My own hands provide for me. I pay taxes to the UK government which subsidizes further education to provide UK employers with British workers so we don't have to get them from overseas. We don't have the skills shortages you're experiencing as a result of short-sighted, selfish policies.

Shorter Beatrice: "I've got mine, $#&$# you. You're all stereotypical welfare queens." Says God gave you things you don't have, but doesn't quote Bible where it says this (I'm convinced it's not there).

+Mark Rondot I've been trying to figure that out for years. Congress used to be able to compromise. I have my thoughts as to why government is becoming so divided, but it would probably take a 7 page essay to explain it

+Mark Rondot also, a portion of the problem regarding your support of the people point is that republican politicians have blinded the republican public for the most part by pretending to be all holy bible supporting people which is far from the truth on so many points its not funny. They do this to get in power, then do everything they can to push policies their way regardless of whether the people actually support it or not.

+Mike DeSimone she seems to think that anyone who disagrees with her is a welfare queen. Actually, you can live in a socialist-lite society like the UK and still be a responsible taxpayer. Welfare queens annoy me because I work, but I've never resented students because one day they'll be doctors, engineers, and other essential workers. You can't learn that stuff on the job and you can't deny society an educated workforce in the hope that some self-made millionaires will emerge from the seething mass.

We'll always need professionals and they can't always pay for the degrees they need to qualify. However, they'll more than pay the money back in taxes on their own incomes and those of the other people whose jobs depend on them paying for goods and services.

Well-paid middle-class people hold the economy together. Take out the middle class and you're headed for disaster.

+Mark Rondot haha.....it could probably fill it up, but although I concentrated in politics for my liberal arts in college, I would definitely not want to do that for my phd nor would it help me in my field at all :P

+Mark Rondot no he was referring to the Bible belt holy rollers of the US. The republican party rides the shirttails of the Evangelical church begging for it's next bit of decision making to be made by those who don't agree with society advancing beyond subjugation of others.

True, grants have been all but abolished but you can still get help with your fees and there are low-cost loans. Our system isn't perfect but it's better than nothing.

"Look we have $467,585 taxpayer dollars just laying around. We could help lots of struggling college students! Nah - send Michelle and the girls to Spain for vacation instead..."

State and Local Schools are affordable for all. You do not have to go to Harvard or Columbia like the Privileged classes do.

+Bob Trabucco a serious example of that was actually in DC. The mayor wanted to spend the extra money to help the public schools (not colleges, literally the super underfunded public schools) and the republicans said "no, they had a budget and couldn't keep to it, so they don't deserve more"

+Ron Ellenbecker The problem is not taking the loan the problem is that congress is looking to double the interest rates on loans for students. This increases the time that it takes to pay back those student loans.

+d.angus macdonald i think hillary would have been a good president because she would have been way less tolerant of the right's antics. with that said, had mccain been elected, this would be a 3rd world country. put romney in office, he'll sell off america's assets for profit.

+Ron Ellenbecker Exactly, but that goes with my point earlier. The government shouldnt "give" money to people to go to school, but I have nothing against them giving people who deserve them loans so they can afford school

What's all this I see about an anti-intellectual trend? It's as if the Republicans want to shut down further education altogether. Can anybody shed any light on this?

"Look we have another $424,142 taxpayer dollars just laying around. We could help lots of struggling college students! Nah - lets take a family vacation to South Africa and Botswana instead..."

+Bob Trabucco The president receives a salary in his position, it is a job after all you don't do it for free. Last I checked average american families that are working take vacations and nobody criticizes them for doing so? Why must people criticize any president not just our current president or his family for taking a vacation? It is a perk to having a salary and a job vacation time and the money to pay for that vacation. Find better arguments than vacationing on the taxpayer it's stupid.

The problem +Mitchell Miller is not necessary the lending part but rather the repayment part. With ever increasing rates students such as myself would be paying of loans long after retirement. That to me is crazy.

+bobby pelletier Bush took most of his vacations in the US at his personal ranch - MUCH cheaper. He even scheduled them so his Secret Service agents could spend holidays with their families...

Its not anti-intellectual. Its anti-theft. You elite-wannabees do not have a right to the income of people who rather use their income for the good of their own families, before subsidizing the education of people who whine about not being able to find a job without a PhD. what a nation of cry-babies.

+Glendon Rogers your point is valid. Student loans by the government are way over priced. There is no reason the loan interest rates for government loans should be any more than the market rate just to cover the costs of providing them

+Beatrice Wilson We've had government grants and loans as far back as I remember so I am not sure why you say it is not part of their role....when jobs are scarce and most college grads still can't get jobs I don't think sticking them with larger payments is the way to go...I have worked hard for over 20 years and have worked my way up...but if my loans had been larger I would still be paying them off. We need educated people to compete...it's that simple.

What a great wAy to start...but granting of loans is not discriminated by me..but i belive it a good way start...thank you.

+Mark Gindin people already can't find jobs if they haven't got a college degree and people like you need to start paying your full share of all your benefits.

+Mark Gindin after they get their jobs, they get paid, then pay taxes. If you don't make it possible for people to afford college, you need to get your key workers from abroad because they're the only ones who can actually do the work. What part of that have you missed? I've said it three times already. Let this be the charm. You have a skills shortage that is currently being addressed by immigrants. Want more immigration? Keep pushing up the price of college fees for essential skills like computing, medicine, and engineering.

Not to mention +Mark Gindin only 3rd world countries don't educate their populace. Now we all know what you want for your children's future.

+Mark Gindin I'm not a elite-wannabee I'm a normal working class Joe who has suffered under a poor economy for the last 10+ years. I however have had the ability to open my eyes and along time ago and pay attention to the news and what it takes to make it in this nation to make a living. If you live in a small priveleged community where daddy has handed you his shop down then shutup your family is doing fine. If you are struggling to make ends meet stop being an idiot and pay attention to your world.

+Keenan Casey Average working families don't spend taxpayer money to fly a private jet (Airforce 1) to Europe and Africa. In case you haven't noticed we can't afford it...

+Bob Trabucco we can't afford not to, you mean. You have to protect your president - you want the commies to come take over?

+Mitchell Miller They need to di what ever is necessary to help lower rates or stabilize it to give newly graduate students a fighting chance out there in such a turbulent economy. Jacking up the rates and cutting jobs is making it next to impossible for anyone to think seeking a higher education is worth it any more.

+Bob Trabucco Once again this is considered a benefit for the job. Have you ever paid attention to the actual salary of the president? The presidents salary is much lower than most congressmen. Also Air Force 1 is a flying limo with the express purpose of protecting the president and his family. Get over it.

+Keenan Casey Michelle is not the president. She just is in charge of telling us what we should and shouldn't eat.

+Bob Trabucco considering the dc school budget is actually about 500million, i dunno where you get those figures. But that's not the point. The schools budget needs depends on the number of students/buildings/faculty etc. The point was that even though DC managed to pull of a budget surplus, the republicans decided that the school students who are struggling to make it by on their budget and still laying off teachers weren't entitled to even a portion of the extra money. Republicans continue to rip money away from the public schools which are bad enough already because we dont spend any money on them. Look at the most prosperous countries and those rated best to live in lately. They all spend a hell of a lot more on their public schools than we do and teaching is actually a prized profession and difficult to get into

+Mark Gindin there are not more success stories without a college degree unless you count living in Mom's basement a success.

+Kate Childers He & his family can afford to stay home sometimes. A lot of other Americans have to...

+Glendon Rogers completely agree. Student loan rates most likely got hiked up to make a profit, but they should not be used that way as it is destroying chances for smart, but low income people to attend school affordably.

Good lord, is there a single intelligent well argued conservative out there? I don't think I've run across one yet.

+Kate Childers They all believe in a Magical Being from the sky and that a book that has been written by man and deliberately changed by man for power is the absolute word of god and should be followed to the letter, so not likely

+Bob Trabucco you're arguments would only be valid if Obama was the first president to use these benefits

+Bob Trabucco He and his family do far more good for this country in Africa sowing good impressions than spending all his time at home in a ranch cutting weeds with his head in the dirt, like you know who.

+Robert Beier Not saying he it's something any President isn't ALLOWED to do. Saying it is a very irresponsible thing to do especially in light of the $5 TRILLION in debt racked up in the last 3 years

+Robert Beier He has to use something to argue with. Its not different than arguing that Obama caused the recession when if you look at the job numbers and facts, it wasn't until he came into office and his policies started taking affect that the recession starting going away. They tend to argue that it didnt come back immediately, which is a stupid argument because the economy doesnt change overnight, or even in a couple years. it takes time to get back consumer confidence after bush fucked it all up

+Wendy Cockcroft republicans find spending on education wasteful because they rely on the under educated to keep them in office. it's finally starting to backfire and the constituents that actually do have some common sense God gave them are seeing through the BS. their fear mongering days are coming to a rapid end.

+Bob Trabucco do you know what the difference in distance is between Spain in flight time and say LA is? About 2 hours. The cost for a luxury stay is probably about the same. But here's the kicker in the US Security would have to be tighter and cost even more than it does in some place like Spain. As to former president Bush vacationing at his "Ranch" in Texas. Come on the man has hundreds of built in acres of distance between him and somebody that can hurt him that he owns. Of course you would go there and relax and vacation. The Obamas don't have that wealth that has been inherited from father to son like the Bushes do though so that is a poor comparison.

+Paul Johnson We need universal, single-payer housing, food, insurance, automobiles, clothing, Internet, Cell-phones, and a chicken in every pot right? Where does it end?

+Bob Trabucco regardless of what the actual numbers are, that still doesnt touch my point about the fact that republicans dont give a shit about the public school system, even when there is extra money in the budget.

+Rob Alexander the minute anyone starts with the FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt), I get suspicious. If you can't make your case calmly, you have no case. The whole point of fear-mongering is to stop people thinking rationally about a given situation, e.g. cybersecurity.

Every speech you have given, President +Barack Obama, I have waited for you to say that all student loans are forgiven. That would make my day year month life.

+Bob Trabucco bob, seriously. you are regurgitating a very lame argument that wreaks of disinformation and flat out ignorance. like i said to my main man d.angus, if mccain had been elected and you got your wish, the automobile industry would have fully collapsed, more banks would have gone under, and the great USofA would be a 3rd world country. come to the light bob, come to the light.

nothing the majority of the conservative/right wing has to say is rational so thank you for proving my point. ps. i didn't say ALL, i said majority.

and wendy, i like that you call if FUD. i need to use that from now on.

Ron Paul seems to be reasonable, though he has his faults.

+Bob Trabucco Yes, we need people who aren't starving and have a decent chance at a decent job and health care that isn't reserved for the wealthy. This is what first world countries manage.

+Wendy Cockcroft Ron Paul is in Lala land. His economic ideas are so far out there that only crazy or uneducated people would think they were rational.

+Mitchell Miller THERE IS NO EXTRA MONEY! We are trillions in debt. Your share alone is close to $50k. (love the whole "regardless of the actual numbers" bit - basically saying "ignore any facts whatsoever!") +Keenan Casey The Obamas are millionaires several times over. Not to mention the fact he can vacation at Camp David for essentially free... +Rebecca Schofield - Maybe you can get him to forgive your car loan and mortgage while you are at it...

+Wendy Cockcroft i actually somewhat agree with paul's stance on war. the US needs to stop being the global police department. once our dependence on foreign oil is no longer an issue, i'm sure that will happen.

And the super rich don't tend to be interested in middle-class jobs like medicine and engineering when there's all that lovely money to be made in the corporate world. As I've already said, you need to subsidize education for essential skills where there's a shortage. The students will pay it back in taxes on their own incomes and those of the people whose jobs they will support when they're working. Non-essential courses can be paid for in the usual way because we don't really need Ancient Mesopotamian pottery experts.

+bobby pelletier - I'm with you 100% on the corporate welfare. Just think it should be done fairly. No corporate welfare for Exxon, Mobile, GM, Solyndra, GE, or any other company - whether they make a product the current president is in favor of or not.

+Wendy Cockcroft actually we do. People who can research and properly analyze one subject, are quite good at others.

+Wendy Cockcroft What I hate in that respect is the fact that people who were in my college took "beers of the world" and "wines of the world" why the fuck are we paying for them to take these classes. Essentially, taxpayers are paying for them to get drunk in college

+Paul Johnson why is that not a rational question? Housing, food, clothing, electricity, water, gas - all required right? As much as or even more important then health insurance or education. Why not do it all?

What a joke. Only 8 more months of this comedy act.

+Mitchell Miller Hate to tell you this man but classes like that are designed to add a degree of well rounded sophistication and education. Which is one of the goals of colleges to provide a well rounded education not a limited scope of knowledge. Now if your friends took those classes and learned nothing thats on them.

+Kate Childers in that case, the current incumbent is your best bet in November. +Mitchell Miller I appreciate your point. What ideas can you come up with that guarantee the essential skills the nation needs without subsidizing drunken excess? Fees + books, then pay your own way?

+Keenan Casey taking a politics class, a history class, or even an art class and I would agree with you. Taking a class where everyone just drinks beer and wine (and lets be honest, no one really takes those classes to learn anything) is stupid, pointless, and a waste of money

+Wendy Cockcroft I'm not sure what the best way to approach it really would be. I would say my biggest issue at this point is that those classes are covered with government grants (which are mostly paid fore by higher student loan rates). Eliminating grants could drop student loan rates, making them affordable for everyone that needs/deserves them after then graduate, but at that point, since they would be paying back the loans, we would not subsidizing them for drinking, it would just be their loss in the end

+Mitchell Miller Your making a valid point of what American students take the classes for however the point behind those classes exist for many reasons and one of those reasons is to provide a perspective on cultures outside of the US that politics and history classes cannot provide. A lot can be learned from understanding the roots of beverages that are a part of every culture. Why people in different cultures drink the beers or wines that they do and the cultures built up around them.. The closed minded perspective that these classes are there to get people drunk is just that closed minded.

+Keenan Casey +Paul Johnson how about this then, at least eliminate the beer and wine from the classes. You can learn about them without needing to drink during the classes. That I would be perfectly fine with as a liberal arts elective. I completely understand the cultural enrichment and am all for it, i just have an issue with paying for people to get free alcohol

Unless he's seen them staggering about throwing up in public, in which case he has a point. At a wine-tasting event you're supposed to spit it out, not swig it till you can't walk in a straight line and go up to people you don't know and tell them they're your best friend, etc.

+Mitchell Miller Taking a step back for a moment here. If you were going to school to be a master brewer working in the beer and wine industry classes like these would be important for you to actually sample the different cultural drinks. Sampling trying and drinking these beers becomes essential to your education so that you can tell what the differences are and know some of the reasons for these differences.

+Mitchell Miller the problem there is whatever you are drinking when you are studying you should be drinking when you take the test. psychology 101 :) i'm just sayin'

I wonder if the President actually reads this. I'm sure he'd either find it most instructive — or funny, depending on what mood he's in.

+Rob Alexander I think that is more true for programming. My old roommate programmed much better after a couple beers ;)

edit: he paid for them himself though ;)

If he does read this, maybe I can get him to let me know where's hes going to lunch one day so I could shake his hand once. One of my friends got to about 8 month ago because they happened to go to lunch one day and Obama showed up there

+Wendy Cockcroft Yea, I was jealous. His whole unit got to meet him. Ive watched his motorcade go by several times and have seen him through the window once when it was a cloudy day, but that's as close as ive been. I also walked past a building he had JUST come out of 5 minutes prior and missed him. I haven't had much luck so far :P

The national museums of USA, England, France, German, Russian, Japan have too many Chinese cultural relics. I have two questions: first, did they buy, or steal, or robber them? Second, China was used to be the most powerful Country in the world, has ever its national museum had that many cultural relics of other nations?

+Mitchell Miller oh just ignore +Ray Saucedo he trolls anything and everything on Google+ like that. I don't even read what he writes anymore I just flag it inappropriate.

+Ray Saucedo a better way to make your point would be, "I think that President Obama and the Democrats offer the United States a better deal than the Republicans, who seem to be largely responsible for our economic woes. Obama/Biden 2012."

immaturity is an unfortunate affliction

I thought the Democrats enlarge the economic, but the Republicans enlarge the road to reach that. Still I like Clinton better than Obama. You know why.

keep the countries priorities aligned with our futures necessities President. We cant afford to increase rates on anything education related

our chinese brothers and sisters are waking up now

I was wondering when the post would get inundated with their comments. I'm surprised we made it to 200 with only about half a dozen Chinese posters

+Ron Ellenbecker Colleges for citizens were started because Ben Franklin watched young people with nothing to do cause trouble and commit crimes because they had no skills or education to get jobs.

It's not a perk to be educated, it's a necessity for the rest of us to have educated people available to be our doctors, engineers etc and for our country not to have to import them at a huge cost to our economy. Education for the young is for you and everyone -not for the students.

+John Brooks If you're falling off a cliff, you might as well try to fly. Extra brownie points if you can tell us where I got that from.

+Latweef Shen Myint-Thu All of that is very true. The problem comes when people finally get that job and are trying to pay off that student loan. The higher the interest the longer it takes to pay it off.

+Latweef Shen Myint-Thu the answer is not to "bombard" them but to train them to fill skills shortages. While +Kate Childers is correct about the need for people with the ability to properly research and analyze an assortment of subjects we need to be able to fill those vacancies that demand applicants with specific skillsets that are currently going to overseas people.

Too many colleges. Having a bachelor degree used to be an accomplishment but since college became a business instead of an educational system it has watered down the value of all diplomas. #universityofmontanasouthwesttechnicalinstuteofdallastexas

It should be kept low for the next generation. I finished my degree with a 27000 pounds loan that needs to be paid.

+Wendy Cockcroft it can be hard to judge the market of skills necessary to keep from going overseas. There are a lot of jobs that go wanting because the employers insist on posting really low salaries and others that require specific skills not available from colleges.

My daughter was going to go for her doctorate in Chemistry which seemed like a good choice in a hard science that supposedly paid off well, but since has found that there are now few jobs for those with a doctorate - why this is suddenly true, I don't know, but it's caused her to re-evaluate her plans.

教育改革是有必要的。

If tuition doesn't spiral out at rates that make the growth of my cable bill look modest and reasonable, maybe more people can actually afford to pay for their kids college education out of savings rather than bankrupting themselves. But, this is America where the answer to every question of finances is "more debt!"

+Beatrice Wilson the big corporations don't even pay taxes - and you are expected to pick up the tab for their security, their port usage, their use of the roads (and big trucks are extremely hard on roads), their use on the communications system and pick up the tab for the health care and retirement needs of their employees, not to mention educate their employees for them..

Did your God tell you what the rules are for Corporations who are not people, but money making enterprises for the very few?

How about we change the tax laws back to where they were before so the corporations pay at least part of their tab again.
