How will it help my child develop character and confidence?

Independent learning develops self-confidence; children recognise that they are capable of planning and carrying out their daily work on their own. This builds a high level of self-esteem, which encourages the child to do more on their own. Independent learning allows children to develop abilities such as initiative, concentration, self-motivation, order, organization, co-operation and leadership.

How do you gauge student progress with self-directed learning?

Assessment is an ongoing natural part of everyday activity in a Montessori classroom. In an environment designed to foster student independence, teachers follow the curriculum, giving children individual lessons which allow them to see immediately that the child has grasped the concept. Observed by the teacher, lessons are repeated independently by the child, leading to mastery. Mastery enables the child to move forward and receive the next lesson from the teacher.
