Eight minutes of freefall at 364mph - have you a head for heights to match Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner?
Austrian Felix Baumgartner is on-course to set a world record for the highest free-fall jump after leaping from a balloon capsule at 71,500ft (22km).

One day in my life I will get the guts to do this.

He's got a way to go before he beats Joe Kittinger's 1960 record. Still very cool.

if sixty mph = one mile per minute, then this guy if falling approx. 8x6 = 48 miles (at 360 mph)! Can this math be right?

That's his max speed, not his speed the whole time. They were unclear about that in the article.

I couldn't find a video of his space jump on youtube. does anyone have a link?

I thought terminal velocity was lower than 364mph?

depends on air density...friction

Terminal velocity is a function of fluid density so it would be higher at extreme altitudes.

So it probably won't be eight minutes of freefall at 364 mph then.

once he reaches terminal, it will slowly decrease as he descends, if i'm understanding the concept

risky?

“The data recorder would later indicate that the airplane made fourteen flat spins from 104,000 until impact on the desert floor. I stayed with it through thirteen of those spins before I punched out. I hated losing an expensive airplane, but I couldn’t think of anything else to do.”

Something else did occur which was drag chute deployment at 17,000 feet in the spin. That act demonstrated how well Chuck Yeager reacted under great duress, once he was back in his element of aerodynamic flight. It is notable that the spin was completely stopped by the parachute and with the airplane in a steep and oscillatory dive, but the spin reinitiated when the chute was jettisoned, shortly before Chuck ejected, at 7000 feet.

WOW. I would have shit my pants on the way up.

and your only choice is a ....ACME BALLOON !!!

Is he out of his mind or something? Brave man.

You're absolutely right Matthew. Though this guy is pretty bas ass.

Yeah I saw that jump Taylor - Balls of steel is right

Watch that first step...it's a doozie!

and we need to be able to do this why? let the black bird fly again and maybe would we would need this ability

Can you image if someone committed suicide they would have 8 minutes to think they realized the screwed up... that would suck for them...

That is the most craziest jump I ever heard...

I would think that freefalling@ 364 mph would make ur insides come out!!!

I've been dreaming about doing this since I was 5. What took them so long?

If no one ever tried to push the envelope or stuck to the safe side, we would become a stagnant race. I say go for it guy, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Can't wait to see the helmet feed for this jump. At least they are trying to prepare and stepping it up slowly instead of just deciding to go for the highest jump.

oh great............!
