The Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs will combine under a new brand from next month. On 13 February 2019, the three programs will merge to become the “Marriott Bonvoy” loyalty program. This will be the final step in the ongoing merger of Starwood and Marriott.

The Starwood Preferred Guest, Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Marriott Rewards programs already merged in August last year. The loyalty programs have since still been operating as independent brands, although program benefits have already been standardised.

The loyalty program covers all of the brands in the Marriott, Starwood and Ritz-Carlton portfolios. These include Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien, St Regis and ...more

Airline Jargon: What is a Long Sell?

Ever tried to book a frequent flyer redemption ticket, only to be told there’s no award availability? If you’ve ever tried to redeem your frequent flyer points for a flight, you probably answered “yes”!

It will often be the case that there’s indeed no award availability on the flight you want. But sometimes the availability is there… your computer (or the airline’s call centre) just can’t see it!

It’s relatively common knowledge that airline websites don’t show you all available award flights. Almost every airline omits award availability on ...more

Why You Shouldn’t Book Flights with Mileage Brokers

We all love to get a great deal on Business and First Class flights. There are plenty of legitimate ways to save money on flights, for example by taking advantage of airline sales or redeeming your own frequent flyer points. But some deals are, in fact, too good to be true.

You may have come across mileage brokers such as “I Only Fly First Class” or “Alpha Flight Guru”. These are online mileage brokers that sell Business and First Class tickets at a significant discount to the usual price. These businesses are able to offer these discounts by buying wholesale frequent flyer miles and booking award tickets using those miles on your behalf.

There’s just one small problem… not only is this a violation of the rules of almost every frequent flyer program in the world, but you also risk having your tickets cancelled ...more

The Business Class Flight from Hell

An unlucky AFF member experienced the “flight from hell” last week upon returning home from Singapore. A culmination of unfortunate circumstances, including a disruptive passenger, made the flight especially unpleasant for those on board.

pgsdiver was a Business class passenger on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to Sydney last Friday, along with his wife and 3 children. This was an overnight flight departing around 1am. As the plane was taking off, one of the passengers in Business class decided to start wandering around the aircraft being a nuisance. He continued to do this despite pleas from the crew, both during take-off and later in the flight while the “fasten seat belt” sign was switched on ...more

Singapore Airlines Apologises for Call Centre Wait Times

Singapore Airlines has apologised for the lengthy KrisFlyer call centre waiting times experienced by customers over recent weeks.

Many frequent flyers, including several AFF members, have reported waiting for hours on hold when trying to call the Singapore Airlines or KrisFlyer contact centres recently. Some have even waited so long on hold that the call was eventually disconnected. This may be normal when calling Qantas these days, but it’s definitely unusual for Singapore Airlines ...more

David Jones Amex Cards Hit by Devaluation

The American Express David Jones credit cards have become the latest victim of Amex’s upcoming rewards program devaluation.
Specifically, those who have opted in to earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points with their David Jones Amex or David Jones Amex Platinum card will find their earning potential reduced from 15 April 2019.

Last year, Amex publicised significant changes to its rewards program coming into effect on 15 April of this year. But the change to Qantas transfer rates on David Jones Amex cards was not previously announced. ...more

Airport Lounge Etiquette Faux Pas

Airport lounges are supposed to be exclusive sanctuaries away from the hustle and bustle of busy airport terminals. But, even in the nicest of airport lounges, there’s one thing that can easily ruin the experience: other passengers.

Many frequent flyers will have experienced antisocial behaviour in airport lounges at some point, from people talking loudly on their phones to parents that let their children run amok. Other passengers lacking lounge etiquette can ...more
