The importance of IOT in a Smart Factory

Machinery, tools and materials in the next five years must be transformed in goods IOT compliant. The revolution of the smart factory, needs of advanced devices capable of exchange information in real time. Most of the new machinery available on the market, own a CPU capable through the Ethernet connection of exchange a lot of data useful for maintenance, quality controls, process monitoring and more. An example is the new servo presses IOT compliant supplied by Auloma, devices capable to seek defected parts or process abnormalities in run, thus through the Ethernet connection the servo press can supply raw data in CSV format to be analysed by whichever SPC (Statistical Process Control) for statistic.Ethernet connection now can be considered the best way to support the smart factory infrastructure, this because the problem of electromagnetic compatability makes the wireless connection not reliable in many applications. Of course, data exchanged data only through the Ethernet connection is one of the minor problem for the smart factory evolution, problems such as: data hacking, protocols compatability, software and hardware handshaking, software and hardware reliability, safety cloud and other problems afflict the smart factory evolution and its implemantation in small companies. However, the limit of Ethernet connection consist in a static hardware connection composed by plugs and cables that block on the ground all devices connected. At first glance, this limit deny to be smart to all objects that must be moved in whichever industrial process, but to aid the smart factory evolution, became fundamentals passive supports such as: barcode, QR-code, holographic code and RFID, because this kind of supports can store a lot of data without the support of a connected hardware. RFID thanks to the radio transmission is one of most powerfull solution to exchange data between passive and active devices, the fast transmission and the capacity of store until 2000 bytes of data, put RFID as leader in passive data transmission, more better than barcode or QR-code. Someone could object that a QR-code with the support of a powerful data-base can provide infinite informations and can be ever updated during the various production steps, but the question is “how much is smart a QR-code or a RFID?”. Smart factory requires for the future of intelligent devices capable of execute faster analysis and to make decision alone and the next steps in this direction are available through the use of NFC (Near Field Communication).NFC allow a P2P communication and this possibility makes very smart the objects supported by this technology, because NFC allow the possibility to save data, to provide input or output to execute some actions and this without the WI-FI support. The actual limit of this technology is that can working only if exist a the short clearance between the objects, maximum four centimetres, but the potentiality of this technology is very important. The next development of NFC will be an improvement of the speed in data tranfer, a more capability to working distant among the devices and a better transmission way to avoid conflicts in data transmission in environments with a lot devices supported by NFC. The NFC Technology start now its application in devices as smartphone or tablet and this possibility can only amplify the possibility of success in IOT applications. The capability to enhance the exchange of process data is tied mainly to the development of low cost AI (Artificial Intelligence) for machinery, the achievement of this combination it is one of the most goal for IOT in the future smart factory.
