Space heater dangers!
Space heater dangers abound in many New Orleans older homes. While space heaters provide the warmth we desire many are unvented with little to no safety features. Poor installation location is another safety hazard that is commonly found. It is not uncommon to enter a double shotgun house in the winter to find a space heater in every room lit. The house feels so cozy and warm. At times you may start to feel sleepy; it’s not just from the heat, it’s from the carbon monoxide produced from the unvented space heater. Newer space heaters have carbon monoxide sensors and anti-tip sensors built in with warning labels on the sides. Installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms is a safety feature you may want to consider if you have unvented space heaters.

Importance of attic ventilation.
Attic ventilation rules were developed in the 1940's when attic spaces developed problems with mold and mildew due to excess moisture. With newer construction materials and techniques, houses were being built tighter. The new homes with a tighter envelope, retained more moisture. Some of the normal moisture sources generated include our breath, by cooking, or bathing. As this moisture migrated into the attic spaces, problems began to develop. Proper attic ventilation is designed to move air and moisture out of the attic.

Improperly built decks can be dangerous.
Over a million decks are built each year, but only about half are code compliant.  The construction and safety of decks have become a real concern within the building community.  A growing number of deck failures, related injuries and deaths have resulted from improper deck construction. Decks look simple to build, but many people do not realize that decks are structures that need to be designed to resist certain stresses. It must be designed to support the weight of people as well as lateral and uplift loads that can act on the deck. These loads or movement can result from occupant movement, wind or seismic activity. Four of the most common overlooked requirements are proper fastening of: ledger connection,  guardrails to deck, post-base connections, openings in guards and stair railings. Proper connections throughout the structure is essential to building a safe deck.

Adapters for 2 slot outlets. The refrigerator case in this photo had electricity flowing through it. An adapter was used on a two slot ungrounded outlet. The ground wire is a third wire that normally conducts no electricity, it is an escape route for stray electricity, in case something goes wrong with the appliance or receptacle. When an appliance malfunctions, a cord is damaged, a connection comes loose or a receptacle is faulty, a person touching a live electrical component may get a shock.
