Just a follow up to the previous post about securing your phone system. We had a customer yesterday that had their phone system hacked and they received a bill from Verizon for $242,000 for phone calls to Somalia. This customer happened to have a Nortel phone system but the technique the hackers used will work with any phone system that is not adequately secured. To secure your phone system make sure that all mailboxes have secure passwords. Make sure that the system administrator mailbox does not have the default password. Disable call re-direct and disable message notification.

We have had several calls this week from customer's who had their phone systems hacked. What the hackers are looking for are voice mailboxes with no passwords, default passwords or weak passwords like "1,2,3,4" or "0,0,0,0". There are several things you can do to prevent hacking such as disabling call redirect but the number one thing is to change all your voice mail passwords. So far we have seen this occur with Nortel Phone Systems and Panasonic but any phone system with voice mail is vulnerable using the same methods.
