International operations  -

Probably the most distance drove for a single Op, or maybe not. Either way, it was fun and epic.

Operation Moonshot
"One small field for Enlightenment, one giant leap for mankind!"

Goal: To see if we can make a global impact at the spur of the moment.
Result: Visible from the moon!

103.8 million MU from 6 layers of 17.3 million MU each

First and foremost, huge thanks and respect from the whole op team go out to agent Iso8583 +Lawrence Rowan for jumping on his motorcycle in the midday heat to ride from Dubai to Abu Dhabi at zero notice and take down a last minute blocker. Without him, this wouldn’t have happened.

Now, the story.

In the aftermath of the #Persepolis shenanigans, the day before a faction meetup on June 2, I had a spur-of-the-moment idea to take advantage of an existing base link from Karachi to Peshawar, Pakistan, as a shortcut to my Onyx Illuminator badge.

After initially looking at fielding from Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, agent LevelEight +Atif Siddiqui and I decided to see if we could get a team together to do it from Ruwais so that we could cover most of the UAE in the process. During the meetup we managed to rope a few more agents together, and a plan was born for the next day.

In order to reach Peshawar, which at about 2200 km was beyond the range of a P8 with 4 RLA, we gathered 4 SoftBank Ultra Links at the meetup, which allowed us to reach up to 2500 km or so with just a P7 (5xR8). This had the added benefit of letting us build the portals at the last minute, instead of flipping to upgrade as we had initially thought, which would have given up the plan an hour early. Huge thanks to agent MrAlansaari +Mohamed Alansaari for donating his SBUL!

Both teams headed out at about 9 in the morning Friday, July 3. This was not easy for the Dubai group, who had only gotten home from the meetup and team mission day in old Dubai at around 4 am. We did not get to our respective homes after the op until 2-4 am Saturday, July 4.

Our friends in Abu Dhabi, agents cookimonster +Lindi Prior and TenCamels +Ten Camels, drove from Abu Dhabi to Ruwais the long way, via Madinat Zayed, to take out a blocking link.

Dubai agent LevelEight and I (Eirrann) drove the very long way from Dubai to Ruwais, via Al Ain, to take out a bunch of blocking links. All told, we drove about 1,000 km in a day (see the MyTracks images below). We were joined by agent Fighter4Life +AinaweeUAE, from Al Ain/Abu Dhabi, who ended up traveling the furthest of all with a whopping 1300+ km.

This being the holy month of Ramadan in the UAE, neither team had any food or water from sunrise until after the fields went up, just after sunset, when we had a celebratory Iftar dinner. Suffice it to say that this was not an easy task in 50+ degree Celsius heat! (In fact, I've been home recovering from heat exhaustion and dehydration today. I don't recommend going a full day of Ingress in the desert heat without water.)

I got the first field up 5 minutes before our desired CP, but then we were hammered by technical difficulties with a scanner for the next hour. In the end, we managed to get six layers up of 17.3 million MU each for a total of about 103.8 million MU, including a last minute effort by Karachi agents Junaid2001 +Junaid Rahman and his son, Abdur07, to set up the fifth and sixth layers (his son got quadruple Onyx Illuminator on his first ever field).

Right now, agents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are busy hunting down the 13 remaining RES MU in our cell. We’ve gotten the cell north of Dubai down to zero RES MU, and there are just a few stragglers left in ours.

The fields are still up as of this writing; it will be interesting to see how long they last.

Hopefully other members of the op team will share their stories, too.

Thanks +Joe Philley ... That's a lesson of life.

A young man went to seek an important position at a large printing company. He passed the initial interview and was going to meet the director for the final interview. The director saw his resume, it was excellent. And asked, '
Have you received a scholarship for school?' The boy replied, " No '
'It was your father who paid for your studies? '
'Yes.' He replied.
' Where does your father work? '
' My father is a Blacksmith'
The Director asked the young man to show him his hands.
The young man showed a pair of hands soft and perfect.
' Have you ever helped your parents at their job? '
Never, my parents always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, he can do the job better than me.
The director said:
' I have got a request: When you go home today, go and wash the hands of your father and then come see me tomorrow morning.'

The young man felt his chance to get the job was high.
When he returned to his house he asked his father if he would allow him to wash their hands.
His father felt strange, happy, but with mixed feelings and showed their hands to his son. The young man washed his hands, little by little. It was the first time that he noticed his father's hands were wrinkled and they had so many scars. Some bruises were so painful that his skin shuddered when he touched them.
This was the first time that the young man recognized what it meant for this pair of hands to work every day to be able to pay for his study. The bruises on the hands were the price that he payed for their education, his school activities and his future.
After cleaning his father's hands the young man stood in silence and began to tidy and clean up the workshop. That night, father and son talked for a long time.

The next morning, the young man went to the office of the director.
The Director noticed the tears in the eyes of the young man when He asked him: -' Can you tell me what you did and what you learned yesterday at your house?'
The boy replied: -' I washed my father's hands and when I finished I stayed and cleaned his workshop '
Now I know what it is to appreciate and recognize that without my parents , I would not be who I am today . By helping my father I now realize how difficult and hard it is to do something on my own. I have come to appreciate the importance and the value in helping the family.

The director said, "This is what I look for in my people. I want to hire someone who can appreciate the help of others , a person who knows the hardship of others to do things, and a person who does not put money as his only goal in life". ' You are hired '.

A child that has been coddled, Protected and usually given him what he wants, develops a mentality of " I have the right ' and will always put himself first, ignoring the efforts of their parents. If we are this type of protective parent are we really showing love or are we destroying our children?
You can give your child a big house , good food , computer classes , watch on a big screen TV . But when you're washing the floor or painting a wall , please let him experience that too.
After eating have them wash the dishes with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you have no money to hire someone to do this it's because you want to love them the right way . No matter how rich you are, you want them to understand. One day your hair will have gray hair, like the father of this young man.
The most important thing is that your child learns to appreciate the effort and to experience the difficulties and learn the ability to work with others to get things done.

Type of appeal: Rejected New Submission
Title:  Al Musalla Mall Fahidi
Coordinates: 25.258342,55.298033

The proposed portal is a high-rise Al Musalla Tower Mall is located in Al Fahidi District in Bur Dubai and has a strategically great situation. The Al Musalla Tower Mall is not only a shopping mall but also was built to be a business center and its right at Al Fahidi Metro station which makes it very easy to reach from any direction with the help of the great Dubai Metro. Tower Mall also has a great stage where lots of live performances are held every week and almost every day. The shopping center is great for children and families.

Following attached is the original photo of portal submission which is the main lobby that has artistic features, and other photos from Google Maps.

+NIA Ops Please reconsider and accept this candidate as it fulfills the portal criteria in my opinion as well as in content and in spirit and deserves being a portal in this location.

Title: Hammer Of Thor
Coordinates: 25.073842,55.399769

The proposed portal is a monument of our very famous comic superhero weapon/shield/artillery/cavalry The Hammer Of Thor. The location is a place where comic fans can gather and socialize. Given the rarity of comic fans in this region, this place possess a high value, as much as Thor's Hammer. Kindly take a second look and consider the candidature of this portal. Following attached is the original photo as well as a slightly cropped modified one that fulfills the picture criteria in more better way.

Title: Sharjah Soccer Club Wall Mural
Coordinates: 25.320703,55.373895

The proposed portal is a large wall mural of man playing football with the soccer sign in the background. This demonstrates the local support of football as a game as well as street art. Also attached here is a cropped image that should make it more better as a photo.

This candidate thus fully conforms to the picture rules. As such this fully complies to the current portal submission guide lines.

+NIA Ops  Please reconsider and accept this candidate as it fulfills the portal criteria in my opinion both in content and in spirit of arts and sports.

Thanks for the response, +NIA Ops. I gracefully accept your rejection. However, can you please let us know as to why this can't be a portal? Despite nothing contradicting to the Portal Guidelines, maybe this can help us in submitting portals in the future and help you having a bunch of less portals to review in the first place.

Writing unit tests (before code) ... How relevant is it in today's world?

#Discuss

Do We Need Unit Testing?

Why do programmers hate writing unit tests? Why do they hate even more writing unit tests before coding? You don’t have to answer. I’ve already heard the excuses. These are rhetorical questions.
Twelve Benefits of Writing Unit Tests First (Tim King)

I Pity The Fool Who Doesn't Write Unit Tests
Unit tests prove that your code actually works
    You get a low-level regression-test suite
You can improve the design without breaking it
It's more fun to code with them than without
    They demonstrate concrete progress
Unit tests are a form of sample code
It forces you to plan before you code
It reduces the cost of bugs
It's even better than code inspections
    It virtually eliminates coder's block
    Unit tests make better designs
It's faster than writing code without tests

Distance calculator used: http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html shows 18.16 meters.

The proposed portal is a museum. Museum charting life from Stone Age to pre–oil era of United Arab Emirates through artifacts, antiquities & artworks.

Since we both are in agreement that the portal candidate meets the candidate portal criteria. While there are portals in the region that are even closer than 18 meters, this could also be considered as not safe hacking distance. However, given the quality of the portal and its artistic presence, can  you kindly approve this a few meters away at 24.216097, 55.774063
