Back in June, cargo ship YM Efficiency encountered 9 meter swells off the east coast of Australia and lost 81 shipping containers overboard. To date, only 39 have been (partially) located – 2 onshore and 37 on the ocean floor. With the increase in traffic on the high seas unfortunately such incidents are on the rise. Today we look at the challenges associated with tracking the contents of shipping containers and why, despite today’s advanced #trackandtrace technology, there remains a lack of real-time, item-level insight into their movement through complex lifecycles, chain-of-custody processes and global supply chains. Just north of Sydney, the city of Newcastle is deploying a #LPWAN #IoT network based on the #LoRaWAN open standard. The project has a number of goals – not only will it help translate what’s happening in the physical world into the digital so council can manage its large asset base much more efficiently, the technology will also be made available to start-ups who want to build, test and deploy new applications, rapidly. With tag, sensor and device technology continually evolving and delivering new opportunities to innovate – it’s an exciting time to be in this space! We talk about tracking assets every day here at Relegen, but the Holy Grail is for our ‘things’ to be able to sense, talk and react in real-time. Even though #RFID other forms of wireless connectivity have been around for some time, in many cases the projected benefits cannot justify the cost of implementation. New low power wide area networks ( #LPWAN ) platforms could make this cost of entry barrier a thing of the past and accelerate mainstream adoption. Today’s blog takes a look at this emerging economical platform for the Internet of Things. One of the key value propositions of auto-ID technology, such as RFID and NFC, is its ability to generate insight from unpowered, unconnected things. Today’s blog examines some of the ways consumer brands are taking advantage https://goo.gl/G7UXwu » #NFC #RFID #autoID #enterpriseassetintelligence

The who’s who of #RFID gathered recently for the 12th Annual RFID Journal Awards to pay homage to innovation in auto-ID across a number of categories. This year’s awards featured an eclectic mix: fashion retailers, hospitals, copper mines in the Andes, car manufacturers, steel producers, automotive tool tracking, pharmaceutical packaging that detects patient usage and temperature, through to kitchen appliances – smart blenders which sense what you are attempting to do and adjust the controls accordingly. In an era of mega-warehouses and distribution centres (think Amazon, Walmart, Target, Tesco, NASA, Boeing, Airbus and others), keeping track of millions of assets, products, parts and components can be a time-consuming job, even with the help of RFID. To assist, MIT have prototyped a new drone-based relay technology which extends the efficiency, read-range, and ROI of passive RFID inventory management systems – and safer use of UAV’s when flying indoors. An article back in 2017 caught our attention about how a St George Bank computer monitor, destined for recycling within Australia, turned up on a toxic e-waste dump in West Africa and was being pulled apart by young children. Even though regulations demand well-documented end-of-life IT asset management, reports indicate that over 500 container loads arrive at West Africa from developed countries each month. The need for better asset intelligence around e-waste chain of custody is now both a moral and strategic imperative. Today’s blog examines the complex issues surrounding IT asset disposal and how an item serialisation technology platform can help. We read with great interest a recent investigative news piece which examined a string of derailments around Amtrak’s Penn Station in New York. The report got us thinking about the significant challenges rail – and indeed all asset-intensive – organisations face when balancing new works projects alongside the maintenance of existing, and often aging, infrastructure assets. In our return to blogging following the launch of our new website, we take a closer look at this story and discuss the potential transformative effects of taking a risk-based approach when planning for critical asset repair and renewal.
