A pretty fascinating write up by security researchers of the recent WannaCrypt ransomware attack/fiasco. Neat bit of serendipitous mitigation too, based on the nature of the malware.

Jayzus, people: WinXP was released 14 years ago. Hospital IT security is clearly the pits for people to try to maintain.

Scepticism is a healthy thing, but needs to be used correctly. Ask two questions: what pieces of evidence led you to your current position, and what pieces of evidence would cause you to change your mind?

This blew my mind a little: in eight years, there's a fairly good chance that people will be landing on Mars. Our generation might get it's own Moon-landing moment. God, I hope that SpaceX succeeds and builds this thing.

This newsletter is an excellent summary for why I feel that there is a better case for optimism (rather than pessimism) about the future. The world is healthier, more peaceful and more democratic than any time in history (in general if not in particular). Tldr: news services are unbalanced in favour of bad news because it sells better.
