The problem is not of secularism, the problem has been the feeling that muslims are different and possibly superior. Since they are in minority, they must have a special status. There are various reasons behind it: large enough numbers to have some say in the government formation,  have ruled Hindus for centuries and sudden loss of territory came as a shock, and a sense of being outsider even though many are indigenous converts. It would probably have been better if India synthesised a composite religion after 1000 years of coexistence, however it did not happen, instead what we had was creation of an Islamic state i.e. Pakistan. Unfortunately,  when muslims are in dominant numbers, then minorities have to follow their code: whole islamic world is a living example. Worse, even muslim intellectuals and liberals can't make any criticism of Islam, which has only gone to harm the community. Unless muslims truly make efforts to promote pluralism and reform their book, no hope is there.

Almost all Indian cities compete with each other on this count. It is deafening to live in our cities and towns.
