Special Edition Practice Periodical Featuring ASEM Students!

You may have noticed that a call went out in the most recent eNews to gather updates and activities from ASEM Student Chapters and IAC Student Team Competition members. This special edition of the Practice Periodical celebrates their recent experiences, plans for the upcoming year and anything else they wished to share. The format was intentionally left to the students.

Four student organizations stepped forward and their work is featured here. Please join me in thanking the students and advisors from Gonzaga University, Saint Cloud State University, the U.S. Military Academy with Stevens Institute of Technology and Western Michigan University.

There's no need to wait for a call. Anytime that you wish to highlight your students is a good time to share your news! Feel free to reach out to communications@asem.org or asem-hq.org to submit your stories and photos.

Thank you to everyone for their contributions and to the ASEM Communications team (Annmarie Uliano, Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, NPDP, PMP and Patrick Sweet) for their tireless help in sharing the news in the best way possible!

ASEM's Fall Tour!

One of the strategic initiatives the society is exploring involves establishing and building relationships with other professional societies. We have taken steps in this direction over the past few of months with an ASEM presence at other engineering management related events.

You can find ASEM next in Pittsburgh (PA) on October 28-30 at the 2018 AIChE Annual Meeting https://www.aiche.org/conferences/aiche-annual-meeting/2018

Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, NPDP, PMP (ASEM's South Central Regional Director), Tricia Simo Kush, CSM, CPEM and Patrick Kush have volunteered to attend these events, staff our booth, and promote ASEM membership, the Society's products and more to the attendees. If you plan to be at the annual meeting, please look for our exhibitor booth and stop by. Teresa, Trish and Patrick look forward to chatting with you.

Innovation and Technology Management for the Business Savvy Engineer

"Innovation is comprised of several areas of technical expertise and of engineering management practice. Innovation starts with the organization’s strategy to provide a mission for R&D teams, developers, and design engineers. As described in Sections 8.2 and 8.3 of the EMBOK, companies are striving for higher levels of innovation to deliver product and process improvements faster due to pressures from globalization and rapid technology advances. Industries are being disrupted by low-cost competitors as well as alternative products and services that previously didn’t exist."

The latest ASEM Practice Periodical is available via PDF at the ASEM website!

This month's Practice Periodical opens with a very thoughtful letter that
member Jiong Shen agreed to share with all readers. Also featured are two
terrific book reviews, one from Teresa Jurgens-Kowal (ASEM's South Central
Regional Director) and the other from Don Kennedy (ASEM Fellow), details on
how to access EMJ articles and the ASEM Election results. Patrick Kush (ASEM's Professional Membership Director) provides an update on the
summer of ASEM member outreach. Hiral Shah (ASEM’s Publication Lead and EMBoK Editor) also delivers an update on the next edition of the EMBoK.
Guest contributions to this issue include great management advice
from Catherine Andrews (writer/blogger), a peek into management’s view of
multitasking from Johanna Rothman (owner of Rothman Consulting Group, Inc) and a second installment on innovation from Bruce Vojak (Managing Director of Breakthrough Advisors, LLC). I am grateful for all submissions; feel free to contact me if you or someone you know is interested in contributing to a future issue.

Domain 7: Marketing and Sales Management in Engineering Organizations

"For many, marketing and sales seems like it would be far outside the scope of what an engineer would care about – even an engineering manager. However, that’s not really the case. Engineers everywhere are involved in activities traditionally reserved for marketing and sales people. Figuring out how to meet a customer’s needs, helping convince a prospective customer to choose a product or service, and developing spec sheets for a conference are all marketing and sales activities that engineers are routinely involved in."

It's the latest installment in the EMBoK Blog series and it's available at the ASEM website. My thanks are extended to Patrick Sweet and Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, NPDP, PMP for their contributions to this informative series!

The Foundations of Quality: Being a Business-Savvy Engineer

"I am currently in the market for a new car. One of the first characteristics that I can list is that I want the vehicle to be of high quality. But, what, exactly, does “quality” mean? Domain 6 of the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK, 4th edition) teaches us about quality as well as operations and supply chain management."

Read more at https://www.asem.org/blog/6423180; thank you, Teresa, for another terrific post!
