The key to this is the big benefit to publishers - from their comments getting indexed and searchable by Google - thereby increasing their organic search engine traffic.

Large publishers - such as TechCrunch - who use Facebook comments are losing out on organic search engine traffic because those comments are inaccessible to Google's crawler. If they switch to G+ they liberate those comments from the walled garden and should see an increase in traffic from searches.
