John Oliver brilliantly explains why we're so bored by the "net neutrality" issue--and why we should be outraged. And he tells us what to do about it.

Spent the weekend in a lighting workshop with the great documentary cinematographer Robert Elfstrom. He's an absolutely brilliant teacher. Had a blast and learned a ton.

Just got my new Raspberry Pi up and running...and then I discovered this. I'm sure I can find something to do with them both. :-)

Bossa Nova Robotics (http://www.bnrobotics.com) dropped by our office today and showed off their amazing robot. It balances on a ball, so is extremely agile in tight spaces, and is gentle around people. They'll be offering it to researchers and industry later this year. I'm ready for one now.

I know you're going to spend so many hours using it to chase the dogs around with a video of a cat. Al least, that's what I would probably do.

Interesting (but not particulalry surprising) look at the Apps industry. Missing from this article is recognition of the fact that a lot of apps these days are wriiten "for hire.". At my company, for example, we design and write a lot of apps for our corporate customers, and are fairly paid for the work. The difference is that our clients generally see their apps as an extension of existing products or services--something to allow their customers easier access to their data, etc.. Rarely are they intending to make money off the app itself.

Agreed. And we might start to see even less of that kind of development as the gold rush continues to wane. Right now, everyone and their mother are putting their resources into making sure they have a "mobile presence". But app development gets pretty expensive, and if the apps don't end up improving a company's bottom line, directly or indirectly, we'll start to see less of them.

Took my new camera on our Memorial Day camping trip. It shoots great video in addition to taking pretty good photos!

Anyone else getting a parked domain page when going to www.opencv.org? Someone forget to renew the domain? Or the hosting contract?

Looks like it's fixed now, at least.

I'm having a hard time seeing how this is going to be good for our industry (software, that is) as a whole. Some of these patents were so broad: pinch-to-zoom, lock screen, etc. Reminds me of Amazon's "1-Click" patent. All this stuff is great for the lawyers but I think it actually hinders innovation and competition--instead of evolving and designing better products, we'll be re-inventing the wheel from scratch because someone has a patent on it.

The scary part is what is coming next year with the changes to the patent laws. First to file is going to create companies that just file on everything (not that they dont do it now.. but at least they have to invent it once to get the patent)
