I wish that was a rhetorical question. I wish I knew the answer, but I honestly don't. I suspect that it may be because we've become used to it. After hundreds of years of tolerating the systematic abuse of minorities by the KKK and other hate groups, most Americans seem only to recognize this kind of threat as a true threat when it happens in places we dream of visiting on vacation.
Or maybe most Americans only recognize prejudicial hatred as a threat when people who look like themselves are the ones being murdered. If that's the answer, it speaks to an underlying lack of empathy and humanity, and the prospect of that is even more horrifying than the terroristic acts themselves.
