Great writeup from Tim Bray about his experiences contributing to an open source project. Tl,dr: it's getting a lot easier, but you still need a lot of assumed knowledge (or helpful devs with time on their hands) to become a contributor. To get more people involved in open source development, we need to continue reducing the barriers to entry for new contributors. For better or worse, this is is the age of one-click cloud deployment and code generation tools; developers have limited time on their hands, and their attention is likely to go where it is easiest for them to make a contribution.

Death is inevitable. no? o.O
“Finally – a positive video about radical life extension. It shows three ways of how people can extend their lives using future technologies, and it’s very easy to understand, even if you are not a scientist. I am officially a fan of the people at The Advances Apes, who have created this animation. The more videos like this one circulate among the vast realms of the internet, the more supporters the idea of life extension will have.” - Maria Konovalenko

Thank your hero!

Meet Mera Devi – a crusader in ‪#‎Rajasthan‬ who freed her village from child labour! ‪#‎NoChildLabour‬

Had it not been for the efforts of this persevering ‘Anganwadi’ worker and teacher from the village of Bhuja, her village in Rajasthan would have topped India’s child labour index.

Meet forty-six-year old, Meera Devi of Bhuja in the Daiya Panchayat of Udaipur district located in the western state of Rajasthan. Her close ties with the village community has motivated her to work tirelessly to stop children from being exploited and taken to the neighbouring state of Gujarat for cotton-picking in the harsh summer months.

Meera is convinced that education is the only way to improve the current conditions existing in the community. This has encouraged her to teach 78 children in her anganwadi centre who she believes will complete their education, change the prevalent practice and bring fame to their remote village.
