Some of my favorite people on here... okay yes, I'm on here but I mean the others ;) Thanks to & for putting this together.
We recently took on a client, called Mission AthleteCare http://www.missionathletecare.com/ they make products designed to help keep athletes cool during their events and workouts. Athletes like Dwayne Wade, Serena Williams, Mia Hamm, and a host of others use and even endorse their products.
I asked Mission if I could test a couple of their products and then write a totally honest review. They agreed. I decided to try two of their hats. One a standard baseball cap and the other a wide-brimmed hat. I went for four hikes; one wearing their wide-brim, then another with my own wide-brim, then their baseball cap and then my baseball cap. I soaked their hats in water and then wrung them out as they recommend. All four hikes took place in 85 to 90 degree temperatures on fairly dry days - 10-20 percent humidity.
I have to say I am not a fan of the style of the Mission wide-brim hat. It's just not me. Not a very manly hat and I was even a little embarrassed wearing it on my hike. But it did actually stay cool for most of the entire 60 minute hike. Whenever there was a little bit of a breeze, it instantly cooled my head down - felt great. Near the end of the hike, it was pretty darn hot out and I did not notice the cooling action quite as much. But the next day is when I realized this hat was working as I went out in my normal wide-brimmed hat and for the last 15-20 minutes of the hike I was constantly wiping the sweat from my brow. So clearly their was a positive improvement by wearing the Mission hat.
Pretty much the same results for the baseball cap. I was a lot more comfortable wearing this hat as it is a good looking, well fitting cap. Again, at about the 45 minute mark I wished I could wet it down a little more, but overall the hat was doing its job - especially when compared to the following day when I wore my normal baseball cap.
The net of it is, as I was wearing each of the Mission hats, I think my expectations may have been too high. But when I returned to my "normal" hats, that's when I realized I was truly cooler wearing the Mission products. One other thing to note: I don't think there could be tougher conditions for this test. My guess is, based on their concept, that they work even better in a humid climate and indoors.
