Upgrade to #ubuntu  16.04 Xenial Xerus went super-smooth (like all Ubuntu upgrades lately). My home PC is now snappier than ever.

I upgraded my toy just-in-time compiler with constant folding and registerization. The generated code is now nearly as fast as ahead-of-time compiled Go code.

A fun use case is a plotter for implicitly defined curves, like (x * x - y * y - y * x - 4) * (x * x + y * y - 16) = 0. Plotting those requires a lot of function evaluations, putting the JIT to good use.

I wrote up more details on https://github.com/barnex/just-in-time-compiler.

First Noogler week

This was my first week at Google, I'm now officially a Noogler! It has been a fun and mildly overwhelming first week.

Many people ask me how the food, offices and computer are. Well, what they say is true: the food at Google is delicious (and, of course, free!). The coffee is splendid as well. I assume I can't take pictures inside the offices, but here is how they look: http://www.businessinsider.com/google-dublin-office-photos-2013-6
I haven't had the time yet to try the pool.

For those who don't know, I'm (training to become) a Site Reliability Engineer. Basically we write software to keep Google up and running no matter what happens, and we get paged when something does go wrong. See http://googleforstudents.blogspot.ie/2012/06/site-reliability-engineers-worlds-most.html

Yesterday was my first TGIF (Thank God it's Friday), where I had to wear this famous Google beanie.

Fuji XT-1 Continuous AF test. Indoor. Typ. 1/500s, f/4, ISO 1600.
High performance mode on, pre-AF off, focus priority. Of about 200 shots, maybe 2 were not in focus.
