I learned the hard way how to design for almost every platform out there. Today I'm releasing something that I really hope will help anybody who wants to learn more about the challenges of multi-DPI design: The Designer's Guide to DPI

This is something I wish I had when I started. The few people at Google who read it (designers and non designers) found it very interesting so why not make it public.

Any feedback is very welcome. I sincerely hope it will be useful.

Android Needs A Simulator, Not An Emulator

"A simulator is a shim that sits between the Android operating system runtime and the computer’s running operating system. It bridges the two into a single unit which behaves closely to how a real device or full emulator would at a fraction of the overhead."

"There always will be a need for a proper emulator for acceptance testing your application in an environment that behaves exactly like a device. For day-to-day development this is simply not needed. Developer productivity will rise dramatically and the simplicity through which testing can now be done will encourage their use and with any luck improve overall app quality."

For the past few months, +Mathieu Calba and I have been working really hard on the Capitaine Train #Android app, the best train ticket booking engine in France and nearby countries. We are really proud to finally see it live on the Play Store[0]. Go get it now!

Serendipitous ideas
The story of #Muzei Live Wallpaper for Android

I wrote a blog post about what inspired me to create Muzei. Spoiler alert, DashClock was heavily involved.

Check it out!

A smartphone is a deeply personal thing. It’s no surprise that the Personalization category on Google Play is home to some of Android’s most popular apps. Wallpapers, widgets, home screen replacements, and other apps that let you personalize every little nook and cranny of your device are intensely popular on the platform…

New version already!!
Hard to believe, but almost 3 months have passed since we launched Espresso for Android; time flies when you’re doing UI testing. Today, we are excited to share a new version with you.

Notable updates in Espresso 1.1:

Swipe view actions - swipe left or right at those wonderful view pagers (goo.gl/8WTNLs)

Multi-window support - target those pesky autocomplete windows with onView.inRoot (goo.gl/sOX1hN)

Type text improvements - append text in a pre-focused field by using typeTextIntoFocusedView (goo.gl/9ObM8K)

A new contrib library - which includes support for interacting with Navigation drawers (goo.gl/l5E8Xd)

Various bug fixes and optimizations - review full list of changes here: goo.gl/VOSOEj

Happy New Year and happy #androidtesting !
