The time has come again that I have to do it.

#fail day: Stuck with making wrapper for interfacing METIS C Library with R through .C call interface. Bad segfault, doesn't seem the wrapper has any error. May be anything, R, METIS, kernel, or my code (highest probability) be the culprit. I will have a look tomorrow. I don't think i need to invest time for the .Call interface.

In this post, I will quickly show how you can use a debugger to hack poorly written code. More specifically, how to enter a wrong password but still get access. Before proceeding, I should be clear, that this is just a demonstration, and the programs out…

R is like drug. Very fast to make prototypes, a shit load of libraries, therefore addictive and useful. If not used carefully, there will be silent errors and things happening internally without your knowledge (unless one is an R expert in the true sense). At the end, once you start doing the framework in R, you cannot leave it.

For rehabilitation, it is a good habit to keep on doing things using compiled programming languages. Fast prototyping can significantly deteriorate programming and design skills.

Resharing this horror

Scary story:

Yesterday I was going through some code where I encountered a comment saying something like this:

"Platform dependent functions are not written at this moment. Implementing with #ifdef now. "

And there was an ifdef forest through which I needed to chop through.

Last commit date for the file? Around 8 years ago. It shivered through my bones.

Lesson 1: If it is not now, then it will be never.
Lesson 2: Small harmless decisions having dependencies can soon become a bomb.
