I've done a lot of huffing and puffing after realizing that the USSR was one of the first countries in the world to legalize abortion, thereby lowering maternal and infant death statistics from ~5 to 0.5%. And while Russia today does have the highest abortion rate per woman in the world, the Putin government's attempts to, slowly but surely, make sure women have lots of kids and NOT have access to safe, affordable abortions provided in licensed medical facilities makes me cringe.
This is especially awful considering the overall negative attitude of the general public to male contraception (of any sort) and to the pill - and the lack of education about the dangers of abortion. [I have taken a friend to get her 4th abortion. The girl was 20 at the time, and not planning on leaving her boyfriend - he had "done the right thing", according to her, by paying for the abortion...

Instead of investing money in sexual education, in Russia today the goal is to make sure women have lots of kids - even if they can't afford to raise them, don't want them, or are not going to be able to take care of them. So we'll be just like the states soon...
