A Resume is more than just words on paper ...

What it says or doesn’t say about you could be the key to propelling your career to new heights.  Don’t underestimate the value of a well-written resume. It is often the only contact between you and your potential employer.

Since the one and only first impression is critical, it is important to show recruiters what you have to offer. If the resume lacks organization and consistency, it will hurt your chances of getting contacted for an interview.  Hiring managers literally spend seconds on a resume before deciding whether or not to explore it further or move on to the next.

Whether you are a business degree graduate or an experienced professional, here are some tips from Barbara Urlaub for building a better resume:

• Don’t use “form” resumes.  They look generic and they don’t stand out in the pack.
• Use “Bold Lettering” here and there to highlight important points.
• Don’t use “I”, “Me”, or “We”
• Use good adjectives when describing duties.
• Be consistent with date formatting, layout, justification and returns.
• Watch the tenses when switching between past and present.
• Proofread and correct any punctuation, capitalization, or misspelling mistakes.

Making a difference

“I’ve had wonderful responses from clients that rave about the speed of receiving interviews and being offered the job soon after,” says Barbara Urlaub, Founder and Executive Director of AAA Professional Resume Service out of Phoenix, Arizona.  “My formula to a really dynamic resume has been to incorporate who they are and the experience they’ve had with the job that they’re searching for, and then combine it all together.”

Barbara recalls receiving a call from a gentleman who thought she was his resume writer in the past, but wasn’t. He is a radio announcer and said he usually has to claw and keep pounding to get people to look at his resume. Immediately after she completed his resume, he submitted it to the station on a Thursday, was interviewed the next day, and hired to start Monday. He was so surprised that he asked Barbara to write another resume for him. Why? Because that first resume was for a behind-the-scenes position. He had been an announcer in the past and he was looking to get the position of announcer at this other station. Finally, he  had the opportunity of getting the position he really wanted.

In 2014, we celebrated 25 years of helping others to succeed ...

While it may seem just yesterday, Barbara Urlaub began her career as the owner and Executive Director of AAA Professional Resume Service in 1989.  She explains that "in 1989, I was serving as an attache at the Arizona State Senate. While public policy development by elected officials was enlightening, I found that becoming a professional writer was more intriguing."

"Through all these years of writing, I've had the pleasure of meeting fascinating people and transferring their thoughts, experiences, and statements into innovative, personalized documents generating powerful results. The ability to provide instant recognition for job seekers through creative writing has been one of my most rewarding experiences. Seeing thousands of clients across the state of Arizona, nationally and internationally, find rapid employment is extremely gratifying."
