The spot at which a tree's trunk enters the ground is called the crown because it usually flairs out a bit at that point. While a younger tree may not have that flair, if an older tree doesn't, that as sure sign that at some times, someone put something solid, like too much mulch or a tree ring, around the tree.
When you're inspecting your trees -- and you DO check them out, don't you? -- check the area where the tree meets the ground. If there's no flair, tap on the trunk to see if it sounds hollow. Also check for holes in the bark, mushrooms, conks, or sap. Then consult a professional arborist to see how best to repair the damage.
