Why Was 5 x 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 Marked Wrong?

It seems absurd at first glance: we all know that 5 x 3 is equal to 3 x 5, which is 15. But check out the formal definition of multiplication:

The multiplication of two whole numbers, when thinking of multiplication as repeated addition, is equivalent to adding as many copies of one of them (multiplicand, written second) as the value of the other one (multiplier, written first).

In other words, 5 x 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3

Why should this matter? It matters because the term equal is not the same as equivalent. Although 5 x 3 is equal to 5 + 5 + 5 it is not equivalent to 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3. Suppose you were buying chocolates for your sweethearts on Valentine's Day. You would have 3 boxes of 5 chocolates each in one case, and 5 boxes of 3 chocolates in the other case. What you choose to buy depends on how many sweethearts you are trying to impress, right?

Perhaps more importantly, the difference is also a fundamental concept in computer science.

Notice that the second problem is marked incorrect as well. That's because keeping rows and columns straight in matrix multiplication is important. As explained in the link below: "Order is essential in the definition of multiplication because not all forms of multiplication are commutative, such as matrix multiplication. This is why it is taught as a separate property."

So, what do you think? Do you agree with the teacher or not?

#HappyFriday! Bacon-scented dryer sheets? Sadly, it's not real. However, it's slick, professional packaging could fool a friend or family member. PrankPack.com produces "Genuine Fake" gift boxes such as the one below.

You can always find weirdly high-tech appliances at CES, be it a washing machine that receives text messages or a refrigerator with a tablet grafted onto it. But you can also find some of the...

Called due to the reviews and I have to say that the reviewers were right. John came the same day, diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes and had it fixed quickly. Price was reasonable and service was great.

Fortunately, John arrived much earlier than expected, and was quick, professional, and a pleasure meeting. He repaired the refrigerator in no time, and the labor was cost effective. I highly recommend this business!

John arrived today in the time frame he said he would. He showed me the part that was broken and told me what the total repair cost would be. He was friendly and courteous. My washing machine is working like a new.

Great service. The burners on my range were acting up and John was able to diagnose the issue and fix it quickly. He then checked out several other areas that tend to be problems and found that my oven was actually in pretty good shape. He then gave me some things to look out for and explained how to operate my unit better. And he did it all for the service call price. If I have any issues with any of my appliances, I'll definitely call American Appliance again.
