From beginning to end Matt was great to work with. He brought my vision to life — I absolutely love the look and feel of my bike. My Appleman is awesome in all situations, long gravel rides, road hill repeats, commuting to work and everything in between. Get an Appleman — you will never need to buy another bike again!

I have now clocked a few miles on my new Appleman. My first impressions was correct, you have built me the best fitting bike I have ever had a chance to ride in my 45 years of cycling and its exactly what I wanted. It has a very good power transfer, stiff where necessary, yet compliant and very stable at any speed on any road. I was surprised upon unpacking the bike, it looked a lot better than I expected; from the pictures of other Appleman bikes I had seen on the web, I was expecting a rough and industrial look and feel, what I have got is a bike that is very neatly finished, looks fantastic and professional.

From the first contact to the final product, Matt was a pleasure to work with! Cannot say enough good things about this cooperation. I found Matt by coincidence just looking on the internet for custom frame builders. I almost decided to go with someone else, but a couple of emails and phone calls made me decide otherwise. Matt really lets you design the bike aesthetically and based on your measurements, the frame is built. What I like about the design is the fact that you can really see that this product is handbuilt, which to me is a good thing! I have not had a chance yet to take the bike out for a really good and long ride, but I'm sure it rides equally awesome as the way it looks. But I will definitely update later on with the exact details on the ride characteristics. The fact that Matt offers a 25 year warranty on the frame, really means he stands behind his work. Hopefully I will get a chance in the future to work with Matt again on another frame.

Matt created a great bike for my husband. He worked with me beforehand to make a special little treat that I could give him on his birthday. And then he worked one on one with my husband to get the right fit for how my husband rides. He even went on a ride with him so he could evaluate exactly how the bike should be. Matt is easy to work with and fun!

When I initially contacted Matt, I was immediately impressed by his knowledge of carbon fiber and how pleasant he was to speak to. After contacting a number of custom fiber frame builders, I ultimately decided to go with Matt because: 1. As a composite engineer, Matt has the experience and indepth knowledge to design and specify the diameter and layup each tube in the frame he was building for me. I found this more attractive than most carbon builders who simply bond off the shelf carbon tubes together. 2. While Matt specifies the design of each tube, he relies on a custom carbon tube maker to make the tubes. One other builder I spoke to makes his own tubes in house. While this is certainly an acceptable approach, in my view, it is better and less expensive for the builder to concentrate on designing and making the frame, while a specialty carbon tube company make the tubes. 3. By no means are Matt's frames inexpensive. However, his frames are less expensive than several other custom carbon frame builders, while providing a very high level of composite engineering and know how to the process. 4. Matt's focus on ride quality, not weight. I was not interested in an ultralight frame. 5. Aesthetics - I like the timelessness of the raw carbon frame. Too many carbon bikes look trendy when purchased, but then look dated in a year or two. During the design process, Matt was great to work with. He was patient and answered all my questions. He even went beyond what is normally expected and sent me a specially sized stem for my current bike to try to get a sense of the geometry he was proposing. While skeptical, I gave it a try, and much to my surprise, like it. The final geometry is very close to what Matt proposed in the beginning of the process. The frame arrived about 2 weeks ago, right on schedule. Now that the frame is built up, I have managed about 50 miles on the bike. The bike is awesome. I really like the fit. I'm more relaxed on the bike. The bike feels great. I have been riding steel and Ti for probably 25 years. Every once in awhile I would get the itch to get a carbon bike and would go test ride a Trek, Specialized, etc. I always walked away saying I don't like the way they feel, either really harsh or disconnected from the road. The Appleman is not like that. It feels solid, connected to the road. The frame is also stiff, but somehow smooth on all but the worst pavement. I noticed the stiffness on sprints and climbs. Maybe it is because I was on a new bike, but it sure seemed I was going faster with less effort. Overall, this is an awesome bike.

Great experience from the first phone call to receiving the frame back. :) Spoke to Matt on the phone and he gave me a quote that turned out to be spot on. Also found another crack I had missed, sent me pictures so i could OK the additional work. Frame was done in exactly the time quoted and the work looks great. Best of all, no weight added on the scale. First class work and customer service. Would do it again.

I discovered Appleman Bicycles through a review of NAHBS in 2013. After doing some research I gave Matt a call to discuss what I was looking for in a gravel grinder. I wanted a bike designed for gravel events like the Dirty Kanza and Trans Iowa that was responsive and stiff yet offered comfort for all day riding. After a few discussions I was convinced an Appleman would be my next ride. The experience was top notch from top to bottom. Matt has the ability to listen to what you want and provide suggestions of his own based on his experience. The interview process combined with the fit sheet guarantee the customer gets a final product that exceeds their expectations. In addition, Matt's attention to small details separates himself from other manufacturers. I could not be happier with my Appleman gravel grinder.

Sent carbon frame in for two repairs. Matt was easy to work with and responsive, first repair, worn groove in carbon chain-stay was repaired nicely. Second repair (worn drop-out, which caused problem described above) was/is a difficult fix (even Calfee would not touch it). Matt was willing to give it a go, but in the end was not able to return drop-out to original condition, however Matt did not end up charging me for the work and time spent on the drop-out. I found Matt to be very professional and would not hesitate to work with him again.
