Oral Health Problems That Affect Seniors

Advanced age poses a lot of risks for seniors. This includes oral health problems. Their bodies are no longer as resilient as they used to so they need more care and attention.

Oral health problems that affect seniors include:

Darkened teeth - It is usually caused by changes in dentin, which is the bone-like tissue that lies below the tooth enamel. Consuming stain-causing food and beverages as well as the thinning of the outer enamel layer also contribute to this phenomenon.
Dry mouth - This is the result of reduced saliva flow. Less saliva production is typically a side effect of certain medications or treatments.
A Lessened sense of taste - Advanced age impairs the sense of taste. Disease, medications, and dentures add to this particular sensory loss.
Root decay - This happens when the tooth root is exposed to decay-causing acids. Gum tissue recedes and exposes the root which does not have enamel for protection.
Tooth loss - Gum disease leads to tooth loss in seniors.

Dental Hygiene Tips for Seniors

Seniors should continue to take care of their teeth. If they developed good oral health habits while they were younger, doing them well into their old age would not be a problem.

It is important to brush at least twice a day. Flossing is also something that should be done once a day.

Having regular checkups is another practice that can help you maintain good teeth. Regular visits can help detect early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. In turn, you and your dentist can talk about early treatment options.

Heart Matters: How Poor Oral Health Can Lead To Heart Problems

As children, we were taught to take good care of our teeth. In today’s social media-crazy society, we need to have picture-perfect smiles for our Instagram feeds.

Yes, dental hygiene is important for healthy teeth and gums. However, a healthy mouth can lead to a healthy body overall.

Majority of Americans live with periodontal or gum disease without knowing about it. This can lead to infections in other parts of the body. Bacteria can be carried to the bloodstream and enter vital organs such as the heart.

Tearing Up My Heart

There is evidence of links between oral health and heart disease. Recent studies have shown that having moderate to advanced gum disease can put you at greater risk for heart disease as compared to someone with healthy gums.

Moreover, your oral health can give doctors a hint or warning about what’s happening inside your body. This can include the state of your heart.

Poor oral health can result in heart problems through the transfer of bacteria. Germs can reach the heart through the bloodstream and attach themselves to any susceptible area. This then leads to inflammation and result to illnesses such as endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart.

How Will I Know

You may have gum disease if your gums are red, swollen, and sore when you touch it. Bleeding during brushing or flossing and eating is also an indicator of inflammation. If your gums look as if they detach from your teeth or if you have bad breath, you may have gum disease.

You should also schedule a checkup with an expert. Dr. Toan Chung of Apple Grove Dental is a dentist near Colorado Springs. He also offers other services such as dentures and teeth whitening. He is a cosmetic dentist in Colorado Springs as well.

Five Diseases Linked To Poor Oral Health

A good smile can make anyone’s day. Having well-maintained teeth can lead to self-confidence and high self-esteem.

On the other hand, bad teeth can cause people to be self-conscious and withdraw from others. It can also lead to more oral problems such as tooth decay, gingivitis, and even cancer.

Moreover, dental problems can have deeper repercussions in our body. Here are diseases linked to poor oral hygiene that you may not know about.

#1: Cardiovascular Disease
Poor oral health can lead to heart problems. Periodontal disease happens when the gums are inflamed because of bacteria. The same bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause the arteries to build up plaque and harden. This leads to blood flow problems and heart blockages.

#2: Respiratory Infections
Bacteria in the mouth coming from infected teeth and gums can enter the lungs. Once inside, it can lead to pneumonia, acute bronchitis, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

#3: Dementia
This may seem surprising but dental problems can affect the brain. When inflamed, the gums release substances that can kill brain cells and lead to memory loss. Dementia can result from gingivitis.

#4: Infertility and Pregnancy Problems
Studies have shown a link between infertility and poor oral health in women. Gum disease can result in overall health issues that can hinder a woman’s ability to conceive. Meanwhile, during pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause a pregnant woman to develop oral infections more easily.

#5: Erectile Dysfunction
Chronic periodontal disease (CPD) has been known to cause erectile dysfunction. CPD occurs when gums pull away from teeth and carry bacteria into the bloodstream. This can block the flow of blood to the genitals.

Good dental hygiene is important. Make sure to visit your dentist regularly. Dr. Toan Chung of Apple Grove Dental is a dentist in Colorado Springs who specializes in family dentistry. He also offers cosmetic services and teeth whitening in Colorado Springs.

Baby Teeth: How Early Should You See A Dentist?

Babies are gifts. These adorable little humans need extra tender, loving, care from their parents and guardians.

Witnessing how a baby develops can make one amazed at how the human body works. One milestone that parents look forward to is their baby’s first tooth.

Most babies develop teeth between six and 12 months. Around three months, a baby’s mouth will have increased saliva. By then, they will also start to put their hands in their mouth.

A baby’s first tooth usually comes out at the lower front part of the mouth. At the age of three, most children will have completed their baby teeth already.

Teething typically causes discomfort to babies in the area where the tooth is coming out. The gums in that area may also be swollen and tender and the baby may drool more than usual.

You can ease the teething pain by massaging the baby’s gums. You can also give them solid (not liquid-filled) teething rings or a clean frozen washcloth.

While a baby’s temperature will slightly go up when teething, a true fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius is actually a sign of illness or infection. Don’t use teething tablets, gels with benzocaine, or amber teething necklaces since they may have adverse side effects.

The First Tooth

You should make your first dental appointment within six months after the baby’s first tooth appears. Your kid should be able to see the dentist before their first birthday.

This is to establish good oral hygiene habits. As young as they are, they should know how to take care of their teeth to prevent cavities especially when their permanent teeth come in.
