Just tried two different vintages of Valli's Waitaki Pinot Noir from Grant Taylor. If you haven't been there yet find a bottle or two as there is something special happening down that neck of the Pinot Noir woods...  Sublime and ethereal Pinots.

Nice work, another great #PinotNoir from Akarua!

We are delighted to announce that Akarua Pinot Noir 2011 was awarded GOLD at this year’s Global Pinot Noir Masters in the UK.
The UK competition has a reputation for being the toughest in the business, with many wines failing to reach the medals at all. Akarua Pinot Noir 2011 was one of the highest scores in the whole competition (90 Points)

The Gold and Silver Medals in particular were extremely hard won, as the judges awarded very few high scores, and no Sparkling Wines including some Champagnes, reached a higher medal than Silver. Akarua Brut NV, Akarua Rose Brut NV and Akarua Vintage Brut 2010 were all awarded silver (85 points/100). #GlobalPinotNoirMasters   #Akarua   #AkaruaPinotNoir   #GOLD   #NZWine   #Central   #Otago   #Bannockburn   #Feltonroad   #Lowburn

15 Year Anniversary Celebration - Appellation Central Wine Tours

This week we celebrated our fifteen years in business - and what a fantastic journey it has been.

The event was held in Queenstown with 9 Central Otago vineyards and the Gibbston Cheesery tasting their produce and over 100 Queenstown front-line agents and hotel staff attending.

What great support and loyalty we have had from everyone over the last 15 years. It was a memorable occasion for us, so thank you to all those who attended, those supporters who couldn't make it and all the other wonderful vineyards in Central Otago that we are closely involved with.

Supremely well done.

A fantastic result for Malcolm Rees-Francis and his team at Rockburn Wines being rated the number one 2012 Pinot Noir with Cuisine Magazine's latest issue.

#MtCook   is an iconic destination and really has to be seen to be believed. Worth making the effort to get up before dawn last Sunday and watch the day arrive over Tasman Lake and Mt Cook .  Only 3 hours drive from #Queenstown .

Our Guides pick a favourite vineyard:

We asked Richard where he liked to take people on our tours:

'As part of a wine tour a visit to Chard Farm vineyard near Queenstown is literally 'viticulture on the edge' as we drive along the narrow road with steep drops to the Kawarau River gorge below. Vines carpet the gently sloping terrace making for a spectacular drive to the winery.

Once at the cellar door try their delightful Gewurztraminer 2013, an unsung variety that once tasted is sure to please. Aromas of rose petal and lychee give way to delicately textured tropical flavours and honeysuckle with a gingery lick making for a dry finish finish. Great with a mildly spiced stir fry.' Richard Winchester

Richard has been guiding with Appellation Central for nearly 12 months and has more than a decade working in wine distribution and sales behind him.

Central Otago - 2013 Vintage. We thought 2012 was magnificent, now 2013 wines are coming out in the cellar doors and they are proving exceptional.
The comparison of the last five vintages really demonstrates how consistently Central Otago delivers great wines.
2009 - A cooler year with tight, concentrated tannins, less fruit more spice. Drinking beautifully now but should be quite long lived.
2010 - One out of the bag for those who like rich, earthy wines. Quite brooding in style with dark fruits. Again drinking well, am picking they will be even better in 2-3 years.
2011 - A light year for sure but not without it's charm. Not one for the cellar but they are delightful and still see them getting better for the next few years. A ballerina vintage!
2012 - Structure and balance with good fruit, fine grained tannins. They are still surprisingly tight and I look forward to seeing how they start to open up over next 12-18 months. Will be great wines that are long lived.
2013 - Less obvious tannins than the 2012 and a more fruit forward wine. The wines are surprisingly lively and open but the underlying acidity and firm tannins mark this as a classic vintage to cellar.
Enjoy!
PS: Anyone chancing on a bottle of 2008 Central Otago Pinot Noir they have hit their straps and drinking superbly. Get them out of the cellar and enjoy now.

Lush dry Riesling! Seems a contradiction but the 2012 #PegasusBay Riesling seems to have struck this sublime balance with a touch of lushness, brilliantly clean and dry and lovely dried stone fruit characters.

If you have never tried Pegasus Bay Wines from #Waipara New Zealand then hunt some out because they are very good!!

Central Otago Pinot Noir Vintage 2012 - What our Queenstown guiding team thinks!

In a nutshell a great vintage, beautifully balanced wines, well structured and most will have the ability to improve with age through to 2020.

Some notes from a recent blind tasting of 6 of our favourite wines:

Amisfield 2012 Pinot Noir
None of us had tasted this before as it is still to be released. The wine has an attractive smoky, earthy nose with hints of Indian spices and dark stewed plums. The palate is powerful with intense plums flavours, a touch of spice and velvety tannins. Overall we thought it was drinking very well now with superb balance, great length but still worth tucking away for a few years.  18/20

Mount Difficulty 2012 Pinot Noir
The Mt Difficulty Pinot had a more Burgundian style with barnyard characters on the nose and hints of dried herbs and violets. The palate was medium bodied with bright red berry fruits, some lively backbone acidity and firm tannins with spice notes on the finish. It would be a great match with food now but 2-3 years cellaring should see the tannins soften and the wine open up more.  17/20

Gibbston Valley 2012 Pinot Noir
One of the darkest of the Pinot’s in this line-up the nose was intense and quite complex with fresh crushed red-berries, a hint of aniseed and a touch of Mocha.  The palate was velvety and voluptuous with intense flavours of red berries and dark spices well matched with firm tannins. Overall this Pinot Noir still displayed a very youthful character with great aging potential.  18.5/20

Carrick 2012 Pinot Noir
The Carrick Pinot had a pronounced nose of dark, ripe cherry fruit and Xmas pudding characters with leathery notes. On the palate it is rich and powerful with dark plum, spicy flavours, soft and velvety tannins and a nice amount of acidity to keep lively. A superbly balanced wine already that is drinking well now but could easily be cellared for another 5+ years.  19/20

Chard Farm Mata Au 2012 Pinot Noir
A deceiving Pinot with a quite light and subtle nose of raspberries and an underlying gaminess.  The palate was fresh, lively and spicy and rewarded the tasters when revisiting the wine with excellent structure and subtle tannins. A wine with lovely balance that is drinking well now.  17/20
http://www.chardfarm.co.nz/

Peregrine 2012 Pinot Noir
The last Pinot in the line-up had delightful spicy, dried herb nosed with a hint of aniseed following through to a medium bodied palate of plums, liquorice and some herbal notes. This wine has excellent tannin structure that should see it cellar well in the medium term.  17.5/20

New Zealand puts in a strong performance at the UK Wine and Spirit competition. Of this year’s record breaking number of entries to the #IWSC from New Zealand, almost 90% received an award. This was the second highest rate for any country in the Competition, whose overall average was 81.5% of wines receiving an award.

To top this off Two Sisters 2009 Riesling from #CentralOtago was awarded both The Single Vineyard White Trophy and The Jancis Robinson Trophy for Riesling.

Paradise Trust is a unique, wilderness retreat only 45 minutes drive from Queenstown. Surrounded by stunning native bush, rivers and views to the Southern Alps and offering fantastic options for photography, tramping, fishing and hunting nearby. They have a selection of small cabins with cooking facilities you can rent.

Tragically the original homestead burnt down recently, however the surrounds are unaffected and cabins are still available.

Appellation Central Wine Tours having been operating Wine Tours in Queenstown since 1999 and have become an integral part of the wine community here, with extensive knowledge of the vineyards , the people and the wines.

We truly specialise in small group tour experiences, with a maximum of 11 adults per tour. Our choice of vineyards typically include a mix of some of the better known established producers and smaller boutique producers.

All our Wine Tours included lunch in a vineyard, we see that as an integral part of a social and informative day wine tasting, as well as further experiencing local produce.

Our amazing team of wine guides all undertake professional wine training, are highly personable, well travelled, well educated and all in all great ambassadors for the Queenstown, Central Otago and the wines.

Finally, it is only fair to mention we were the first New Zealand wine tour operator to receive the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism trophy for Wine Tourism Services. We have now won this prestigious award in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

*Wine Tour Perfection!* This was our first wine tour in New Zealand and it was perfection. Philip was a wonderful host, full of local knowledge about the area, the history and the wines. He took us to four different wineries, a cave tour, a walk through the vineyards and an amazing outdoor lunch. I HIGHLY recommend this tour. It's a "must do" for any visit to the south island.

I live 30 mins from Napa Valley, CA, so I've been on my share of Wine Tours. Phillip's tour last week was one of the best I've ever been on. Phillip is knowledgeable, personable, and is relentless about making sure you have the absolute best experience - this tour was second to none!

A delightful small vineyard set in the back roads of Central Otago. Domain Road have proved themselves as a producer of outstanding Pinot Noir as well as some very smart white varieties - Riesling, Pinot Gris and Rose. The setting is totally tranquil in their small garden and the hosts are friendly and knowledgeable.
