I've been enjoying listening through the archives of The China History Podcast for a few months, and today I've had the pleasure of the ten-part history of tea. The roughly 8 hours of content has been fascinating. If you have any affinity for tea or history, I highly recommend this section of the 'cast.

The Ip Man series of films have been among my favourites ever since I watched the first, but Ip Man 3 is remarkable. It's a fantastic martial arts film, yes, but it also has a ton of heart. The love story between Ip Man and his wife is moving and the tone overall carries a surprising kindness for a film full of flying fists and feet.

VR Fantasy, despite its generic game, is an immersive and fun short dungeon crawl game that showcases some of what can be done with Google Cardboard. With all the high cost gear being brought forward, it's exciting to see $10 headsets and a phone create experiences like this.

The Halifax MacDonald Bridge repair work has inconvenienced many people, and there have been some valid criticisms about how it has been conducted, but it's an impressive undertaking.
Halifax Harbour Bridges commissioned Journeyman Film Company to show all the work that's been done on the Macdonald Bridge since the deck replacement project started.

I've enjoyed Erik Davis' deep-dive writings on cultures, religions, and experiences for years but didn't know he had a podcast. Even more exciting than knowing he has been 'casting is that he interviewed one of the folks who developed Dungeons & Dragons 5e. It's a great interview that touches on how D&D now better embraces diverse gender and sexual identities, how playing relates to esoteric experiences and the balance of control and chance.

"We discuss identity, the multicultural multiverse, Eastern Orthodoxy, and the sacred absurdity of terrible dice rolls."
An inspiring chat with Jeremy Crawford, one of the lead designers of the new edition of the classic role playing game. We discuss identity, the multicultural multiverse, Eastern Orthodoxy, and the sacred absurdity of terrible dice rolls....

Kimchi is delicious. It's also hard to find around here without fish ingredients but easy to make at home. Amy shares her recipe for vegan kimchi in this video.

I'm catching up on the wonderful China History Podcast, as it weaves back and forth through the history of China. This episode on Dr. Norman Bethune was a great surprise. Most Canadians don't know his story, but it's arguable he's the most famous Canadian in the world.

The episode follows his work with the Spanish Communists fighting against fascists, his medical breakthroughs and his work to aid the Chinese during the Japanese invasion of the second Sino-Japanese War.

"This week we look at the Canadian and international hero Dr. Norman Bethune. Bethune is a staple among noted western friends and advisors who came to China in 1938 to help the Communists and the people in their struggle against the Japanese. He was not only a great friend of China, but a gifted and brilliant man of medicine as well who had a great impact on thoracic surgery in his day."
