In a previous article we were introduced to utilizing XPATH queries to ascertain the data fields that our business reports use and which reports are in fact being actively utilized. In that article we merely touched upon some of the more important concepts. We NOW take a deeper dive into these concepts showing two possible scenarios to judge the effectiveness of our reports when it comes to database migration and what to carry forward. If this sounds like something that you may require (and I am sure that you will) , then this article is for you!

You know those reports that somehow start off as prototypes and somehow never make it off of the report server. How about those tables that have a gazillion fields which are more than likely not being utilized (based upon current reporting)? The “uglies” normally rear their head when you are performing “house cleaning” exercises or possibly wish to deploy your databases to the cloud and want to keep costs as low as possible by pulling only the minimal amount of data into your warehouses. If this sounds like something that you may require (and I am sure that you will) , then this article is for you!

Performance tuning is not just a topic for DBAs or database developers. Business Intelligence developers also need to consider performance. And with the increasing popularity of in-memory technology such as SSAS Tabular mode - or even PowerPivot, it's important to take into account that this is a completely different beast than the traditional SSAS Multi-Dimensional mode
