Yup!
This article is a long, but fair description of what I've observed all too clearly myself in the last few days: the level-headedness of Norwegian media, government officials and Norwegians on social media on the one hand, versus the insane, fear-mongering hyperbole of the international media on the other. Yes, I'm looking at you, NY Times, CNN, BBC.

Really sad I can't be home with my friends in Norway these days. :(

Went to Den Haag this morning to add flowers to the little pile which is (hopefully) growing outside the Embassy. Not the same as a proper hug, though.

Obama on Oslo Bombing

OBAMA: "There has been a bombing in Oslo, Norway as well as a shooting there. We don't have information yet, but I wanted to personally extend my condolences to the people of Norway. And it's a reminder that the entire international community has a stake in preventing this kind of terror from occurring and that we have to work cooperatively together both on intelligence and in terms of prevention of these kinds of horrible attacks. I remember fondly my visit to Oslo and how warmly the people of Norway treated me, so our hearts go out to them and we will provide any support we can to them as they investigate these occurrences."

Utøya shooting suspect is in police custody and is also a suspect in the Oslo bombing. Witnesses place him (or someone looking at him) at the scene a few minutes prior to the bombing.

Police apparently believe the attacks are locally and politically motivated, not related to international terrorism. Unknown whether there are more people involved, and if there is a danger of further attacks.

Ten people are confirmed dead in the Utøya shooting + and unknown number of (seriously) wounded; they are still searching the waters around the island.

Overall, it seems like people in Norway are keeping calm; even extremist politicians have been keeping quiet and are not jumping to conclusions (at least not publicly).

Emergency services seem to have been working well; and hospitals are able to handle the wounded (though more blood is needed).

Online Norwegians (at least my friends (and I)) call for unity and solidarity. PM says "we should not be ruled by fear".

As many as 30 may have been killed by the gunman at the labour party youth camp at Utøya.

Police press conference starting in a few minutes. Two people confirmed dead. Rumours say an arrest has been made at the airport.

BBC has good live coverage in English: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254705

Right pic is the government building, more than half the windows are blown out (apparently the PM's office is damaged as well).

There's been another explosion as well, closer to the Parliament.

(Yes, Oslo is actually this ugly.)
