Instead of making an album with essentially the same content as his undeniably successful GKMC - as most rappers do (are doing) with follow-up albums - he did something out of his own and his fans' comfort zones. And when I say comfort zone, I mean it - this album makes listeners intentionally uncomfortable.
To Pimp A Butterfly makes GKMC look like a commercial project, which was far from. It puts Kendrick's competitors so far away from what he's trying to do that it almost seems foolish to compare his current persona to other rappers or even to the artist he was two years ago.
We're only 3 months in but this will likely go on to be the best hip-hop (if not overall) album of 2015 with little conversation. It's just way too groundbreaking not to be.
