NEED YOUR SUPPORT
tl;dr: I’m running the 2015 TCS NYC Marathon on November 2015. My fundraising goal is $3000 and will benefit the kick-ass organization Doctors without Borders. Donate herehttp://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/participant/antonella

Thank you!

HERE WE GO AGAIN. I NEED YOUR HELP.
There were three things I firmly believed I would never do: moving to the US, living in New York City, and running a marathon. And here I am: I’ve been in the US for 21 years, in NYC for almost 9, and I’ve just signed up to run in the New York City Marathon on November 1st.

Each time, it was because I received an offer I could not refuse. A great post-doc at the University of Oregon and the opportunity to be with the person I loved. A job at Google. An offer to be one of the 80 members of Doctors without Borders team at the the 2015 TCS NYC Marathon. Doctors without Borders is one of two non-profit I’m passionate about (the other one is Partners in Health). If there is one reason for me to ever run a marathon, this is it.

Doctors without Borders, Nobel prize recipient in 1999, provides emergency medical and humanitarian aid in areas that are often dangerous and difficult to reach and where people desperately need help. Recently, they played a crucial role in fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, but their work reaches all corners of the globe and tackles some of the most difficult medical challenges.

I pledged to raise at least $1500 by August 15 and $3000 by October 25 for Doctors without Borders. Please help me reach my goal.  I’ll be training hard in the next few months so I can start strong on the super-steep Verrazano Bridge and finish strong in Central Park. Donations of every amount are greatly appreciated.

Make a secure donation on my fundraising page (Yes, your gift is 100% tax deductible and you should ask for corporate match): http://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/participant/antonella

With gratitude,

Antonella

MARATHON TRAININING UPDATE - WEEK 2-3

Shout out to my new supporters: +Chris Luther , +Matt Shobe , +Alice Bonhomme-Biais , and a generous anonymous donor.
I’m fundraising for Doctors without Borders, one of the awesomest international relief organization
Please be nice, and donate here: http://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/participant/antonella

I’m increasing my mileage, and last week I ran a long run of about 9.5 miles. After the rain and thunderstorm on Sunday, the weather was cool and cloudy, but not rainy; it was a pleasure to run. I ran from home to Prospect Park and back, with a loop of the Park, a bit longer than 9 miles.
Last week I also did my first trail run ever (5.4M) at the Palisades Park. Fun and hard. I realized that I have a weak left ankle I need to pay attention to. I got a PR in both races.

Running is getting harder with the heat and humidity. My body let me know that it rather prefers the cold weather, thank you very much. Hopefully I will adapt.

I ran 2 races, in the past 2 weeks, the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge (a 3.2M) with my Google people, and the awesome all-women Oakley Mini 10K with my girl people.

I also decided to hire one of the awesome NYRR coaches, Shelly Florence-Glover, to train me for the marathon. So I will have a customized weekly training plan and somebody to keep an eye on me. Shelly thoroughly interviewed me last wee and I’m starting the official training with her next Monday.

Thank you for following me, and please consider supporting me and donating to Doctors without Borders here: http://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/participant/antonella

Laughing aloud at the tweets.
Apparently women scientists, in addition to be #distractinglysexy  and tear-prone, have a remarkable sense of humor.
Female scientists were jumping on Twitter to voice their views on the controversial comments.

So beautiful. Were all the Brits visiting the queen? Looks like you pretty much owned the real estate.

Statistics have suggested a sharp increase in the number of American women dying as a complication of pregnancy since the late 1980s, but a closer look at the data hints that all is not as it seems
